Nurin Izyani

In this case, the teacher could have made a more ethical decision by applying the three components of Moral Action: moral courage, ownership, and efficacy. Firstly, the teacher should have demonstrated moral courage by intervening immediately when she witnessed the abuse, even if she feared conflict with her colleague or negative workplace consequences. She could have firmly stopped the inappropriate behaviour and prioritised the child’s safety. Secondly, the teacher needed to show ownership by recognising that protecting children is the responsibility of every educator and not assuming that someone else would handle the situation. She should have taken personal responsibility to report the incident to the centre supervisor and ensure the child’s well-being. Lastly, the teacher should have exercised efficacy by using her professional knowledge and confidence to respond appropriately, such as following child protection procedures and seeking support from management. By demonstrating moral courage, ownership, and efficacy, the teacher would have been able to make an ethical decision and better protect the child from harm.

Moral courage: She could be thinking that it's none of her business and she might get herself into more trouble instead if she interfered. However, her colleague should have been stopped immediately and if she was unsure, she could have gone to her superior immediately to seek help.

Moral ownership: As a frontline educator and an individual, she has the added responsibility towards all children in her school and that if she can help to protect the child, she should do it. Her conscience and ethics of care and profession should make her speak up for the child.

Moral efficacy: She should know that all actions are recorded on CCTV which would actually back her if she had informed someone then. The CCTV footage can empower her to help the child.
