         <description><![CDATA[<div>Slaves stood at the bottom of the Athenian society. Slaves were considered natural and necessary. Slaves could become Metics if their, masters freed them. The Metics were non-citizens, they were born outside of the Athens. They were free, worked, and paid taxes, but they could not take part in government or own land. Slaves stood at the bottom of the Athenian society.</div>]]></description>
