My character is Bassanio. Bassanio is in need of money as he wants to marry the girl he loves. He does not have the amount of money that he was supposed to have so he asks his friend, Antonio. Antonio's money, however, is not with him so Bassanio and Antonio both go to Shylock (the Jew money lender) to ask for money. Shylock refuses but then they make a deal. The play then goes on. My character is caring because part of the deal is for Antonio to cut one pound of his fair flesh if he loses the deal so Bassanio tries to persuade Antonio into getting out of the deal. Alternatively, my character is also desperate because instead of finding another way into getting money, he tries to prove himself as a worthy suitor.

There is no need to explain the plot in these posts.

Week 1. This week I've been trying to develop my character such as they way my character speaks and what tones I have to use.

Be specific here. Which skills did you use and how could you improve your use of them?
I was using my listening skills as I had to remember when I have to say my lines. Now that I know all my lines I'm trying to remember when I have to say them because I don't say them when I need to sometimes.

In the court scene I try to act sad as I'm getting a pound of flesh cut of however when Portia asks me to give Shylock a punishment I try to sound cocky and powerful as whatever I will then say will happen to Shylock. The change of my voice shows the audience how I go from sad to powerful and my emotions change in just a second. I've been trying to remember my lines and be confident in what I'm saying. still continuing on last weeks blog I've been trying to add emotions in my dialogs. Now that we have all learnt majority of our lines we are trying perfect the play and add new things such as flock of birds into the play. this week we did a flock of birds before the court scene and we had to do a move which shows we are ready to fight. before it is my turn to do this I slowly bring my arms up to signal the others behind me that it is time to step forward. at the end me and Shylock have to have a stare down in which I try to hold back my laughter and have serious face.

Miss Griffiths says:
Try to write each blog post in detail, Karissa.
WWW: You have explained how you have used drama skills in each session.
Target: Use the PDE to ensure that you are writing in detail for each post.
Literacy Target: Use standard English throughout.
Effort Grade: 3

The character I play is called Shylock, he is a Jew living an area which has a lot of antisemitism. He is a character with many different personalities. The way I have approached this character is by emphasising on words that are related to money and riches. This is to show his love and obsession with money. I have done this by exaggerating on a simple word like "ducat" by slightly raising my voice when speaking.

Which drama skills do you use? Voice? Tone? Projection? Be specific!

I have used the drama skill of projection to emphasise my unfathomable love for money and how much I prioritise wealth over anything.

The impact, I believe, would have on the audience is that they would be able to understand Shylock's infatuation with money and how he is living up to the normal Jewish stereotype set in the 20th century.

Week 2 (02/10/2016)
This week I have taken a new approach to Shylock's character. I play Shylock as a cocky, aloof person who only thinks about his wealth but I've decided to focus on his vulnerability seeing as he is a Jew living in an anti-jew area. Though our main theme is comedy, we also wanted to highlight the extreme discrimination in Venice. I tend to use tone to lower my voice to display that I am playing a male character and I really use projection to show that I am quite confident. However in the court scene, Shylock suddenly feels weak and vulnerable, making the audience feel pity for him. Portia has found a loophole in Shylock's bond with Antonio which leaves Shylock dumbfounded and nervous. The whole court turns against him making him feel very small compared to others. To display his weakness, I stuttered when performing simple sentences and physically used different levels to show how low I am compared to everyone else in the court.

Miss Griffiths says:
WWW: Excellent, Tania. You have used the PDE format to structure your writing and you explain in detail the choices you have made for your character. You have also linked your choices to the context of the play.
Target: Use drama terminology to describe the skills you are using.
Literacy Target: Check your use of punctuation.
Effort Grade: 5

Week 3 (08/10/2016)
This week, as a class, we have focused on our character's posture and body language. Shylock is an old man therefore his stance would not be as straight as the other younger characters in this play. This is why I tend to arch my back and mime as if I'm using as walking stick, this displays Shylock's old age and could reflect on his status in Venice at that time. Although he was deemed as rich, he was still hated in his society which could make him feel quite insignificant. Shylock is also a very confident character who trusts in his abilities so I've decided that his body language would be quite broad and exaggerated; this symbolises his attitude as a whole. When staging our scenes, the proxemics between Shylock and the other characters are distant to demonstrate the relationship Shylock has with the people in Venice. This shows that Shylock is extremely unpopular yet he is very arrogant since his power comes from money and wealth.

Week 4 (16/10/2016)
This week I have tried learning my script off by heart. I found this fairly easy because I tend to use a lot of movement and mime to help me remember my lines. The court scene is what I have struggled with the most as the scene is longer compared to others therefore I have a lot of lines to remember. It's also hard because I sometimes forget who comes before me and I forget when my cue is. To try help me remember, I should try remembering the last line of each character that comes before me in order to remember when my cue is.

In the first scene I am the mop seller in an East London Market stall. I think our positioning in the scene is very effective. This is because we are all at different levels symbolising status and whether our characters are humans or objects. I am standing as I am the actual person selling at the stall and in the beginning I pass a mop to Bassanio when he walks through as he is the area's heartthrob. Everyone acts very flustered and crazy when Bassanio passes through and I am the first he accepts a "gift" from so I act very flattered and honored. The impact this has on the audience is that they then realize everyone loves Bassanio as he is a very important character in the play. They watch as everyone gives up even their merchandise to gain approval from "the one and only"
Bassanio.
Week2-
We have rehearsed scene 9 (which I'm in as a speaking character) a few times so I've had the chance at character development. I was able to stand in a certain way that would reflect on how I'm playing a male character by changing my posture and talking differently. I co-play the Duke of Venice so I have to project the fact my character is a very important member of the court as I decide Shylock and Antonio's fate. I have to work on projecting my voice to suit my characters personality and try to make my voice sound deeper/manlier.
Week 3-
I have now worked on my voice much more and projection yet I still need to improve on my body language and gestures. My character is quite biased as he also doesn't approve of Shylock being a Jew so I have to put emphasis on "Jew" during my first few lines which begins scene 9. I have learnt my lines and know when to come in and speak in the scene.

How do you think you could improve your body language and gestures?

I could improve my posture by standing upright with my head held high. I will also use bigger, exaggerated movements when speaking to create the role. This is all affective as it is proving I am a well-respected character who plays a vital role in the scene deciding Shylock and Antonio's fates.

Miss Griffiths says:
WWW: Excellent, Yasmin.

I play the very prestigous, feminine character Portia, a fair maiden from Belmont, in love with the heartthrob Bassanio. I intend to exaggerate my character as much as possible through the use of large dramatic gestures, facial and voice expression. The signature idea of my character is her very exaggerated southern American accent that also adds to the comedic humorous aspect of the play. So far, i am still continuing to develop my characterisation, but for now i think i am working well as i have improved in my voice projection. Voice projection i believe to be very necessary in order to lure the attention of the audience

10/10/16
The previous week we have been attempting to polish our performance and also include a flock of birds to highlight the more serious and important sectors of the play. My aim was to continue to memorise my lines, as i had reached more into the court scene by memory. I must say it was difficult because more of my lines were set in paragraphs in just one scene, when usually the scenes were very short, with around only 3 lines each. Now i can say that i have progressed in terms of learning my lines, but hopefully i will have learnt the entire script in time

Playing loud and confident Nerissa has allowed me to manage my voice expression and projection however I do feel as if I should work on my Southern accent ! I portray the use of comedy through my character by using exaggeration. Exaggerated voice expression, facial expressions and my gestures on stage all bring a very dramatic Nerissa to stage. What I find gelps me with this is the gact that Nerissa is incredibly close to a similarly over dramatic Portia who Nerissa is very supportive of and also dramatises every situation alongside Portia. And as if playing such a great character couldn't get any better, I love the scenes where Nerissa is flirting with Graziano because it makes it all the more enjoyable and humorous !

How do these scenes impact your audience?

Our theme for this play is comedy. I portray my use of comedy through my character by exaggerating my facial expressions and my body language/gestures. This has an impact on the audience as not only do they see your actions clearly, but they see the use of strategies that are used. Many scenes of the play is serious but I try to make it humorous by overemphasizing my gesture and mimicking other characters using my voice (clarity).

Nuru 02/09/16 So far I have continued to develop my character, Portia. As a result , I believe all that is left, is to continue to memorise my lines from the court scene and onwards. I believe this will give me the chance to consider adapting my characterisation skills as well as allowing me to focus more on my gestures and facial expressions. Overall, I would like to think that I am working well, and that I contribute enough to the group.

Another reason is because i am mainly focused on remembering my lines and when i am supposed to speak rather than thinking of my my facial and vocal expressions. Furthermore another scene in particular i would like to improve is the scene after the court scene when Nerissa and Portia reveal to their partners their "participation" in the court. I believe compared to the other scenes, my memorisation of lines in this scene is very weak. I think it is because this scene moves at a faster pace in terms of the speech and the change in dynamics (voice expression).

P.S i could not complete my literacy target in the seperate blog because it would not allow me to. I will try at school.

The use of physical theatre in our play is used very commanly. This means putting emphasis on movements rather than dialogue. For example, at the end of the play, Portia confronts me about not having the ring she gave me as a wife. Instead of explaining much through my lines, I show the audience how much the ring effects me as I show it through my actions and my facial expressions. This is effective as whilst other characters say their lines, the audience attention will still be on you because of the facial expressions and body gestures that are used.

I think the use of comedy throughout the play in some scenes are effective because it makes the play more humorous and enjoyable for the audience. I portray comedy through my character in many different ways. First of all, by exaggerating my facial expressions I do this by gaping, widening my eyes and raising my eyebrows. Emphasizing my gestures also creates a dramatic appearance. I do this by exaggerating a wink, gasping, "fanning" myself with my hand and pursing my lips while shaking my head to show disbelief. Using a slightly higher-pitched voice also creates a dramatic effect. All of these strategies create and impassioned character on stage. Because it makes it amusing for the audience and comical to watch, I think the audience can find a chucklesome character likeable and more engaged to the characters and the play.

For example, for the Selerio and Salario scene, the ensemble group was at the back in a semi circle mocking and laughing Shylock whilst following the lead of the two boys at the front. This creates a funny reaction out of the audience as we over exaggerated our actions and projected our voices and improved our stances.

I have developed my use of voice and sound in order to sound like a male and to engage the audience more. I believe my use of movement and gesture is effective because whilst I'm on stage I exaggerate all my movements by making it bigger. For example whilst I'm opening the casket I raise my arm high up in the air and slowly open it creating suspense for the audience. The impact it has on the audience is that they are more engaged and interested in watching my performance whereas if I had small movements;on stage to th audience it seems like your not doing a lot and cause them to be disinterested. I need to develop my voice projection.

We went to the assembly hall so we could practice our projection and make sure that we are able to speak loud and clearly. Projection is very key because although you might be good at gestures, facial expressions and acting in general; if the audience cannot hear your voice then there is no point. I did some research and I found out that doing an exercise called the "ha" excercise which is really good practice for projection. During this exercise I simply take a big breath in ,expand my lung and abdomen out and force all the air out on the "ha". This builds your projection. Whilst I was on stage I was More prepared to speak because of the practices. I make sure I take a big breath, I have a straight posture and that I am facing the audience then I say my lines. if I have good voic projection then the audience will be able to hear what I am saying clearly. However if I had a lack of projection not only would the audience not be able to hear me but thy start to loose concentration and interest in the performance.

week 1 feedback
in the play Merchant of Venice I play the character Launcelot Gobbo. Launcelot is shylock's servant and has a desire to leave Shylock and work for Bassanio. shylock is a very humorous character therefore to portray that side of his character I am able to over exaggerate my lines and make my gestures much bigger.
overall, In my opinion I believe shylock is a very funny and comedic character to play and to show that I must be able to be confident enough to show that.

week 2 feedback
To be play the character of the casket I must be lively and very enthusiastic. One way I am able to show that is through my voice. to be able to do that I must make my voice very high pitched to show the cheesiness of the whole act.

week 3 feedback
in this week drama we just went over the scenes that needs to be polished and perfected such as the court scene. in that scene Amina, Aisha and I created a flock of bird for shylock to show how vulnerable shylocks position is. The flock of bird with make the audience sympathise with shylock and understand how depressed and forced shylock could be feeling.

week 4
this week we went to the assembly to help us project our voice and see If it is loud enough for the theatre. unfortunately we was not as focused as before but we still got through the piece. the feedback I got was to project my voice as loud as possible but also to take time and be clear in what I say. I must not rush through and understand what I am saying. this will help to know which emotion I should display that would be appropriate enough for my character.
to do act on my feedback I will go through my lines over and understand the meaning. then I will ask either my friend or a family member to test my projection.

week 5
in this weeks drama lesson we as a class performed our play to one of the English teacher Mr Walsh. we were very anxious but in my opinion we did very well. however there were scenes we should act on such as the court scene. this was because the court scene was not as serious as it should have been and had a comical effect in some moments. such as when nuru lift the law book up the chorus made a sound effect which did not compliment the seriousness of the situation.

the stuff that i would like to develop on is my use of facial expressions and the use of projection in my performance also i could add tension in the scene as well as suspense . my character is the duke of Venice , the character has a high role in this scene so Shylock is the only Jewish person their so they all hate him and in the end Antonio is still alive thanks to Portia.

A specific drama skill that I have used in the transition between scene 8 and 9 is floq of birds. I stand opposite Yasmin and I have to look disgusted towards her as she is taking the side of the Jew. I develop my acting skills in this transition as my posture as well as my facial expression improves every time I rehearse it. My facial expression and the way I stand represents the emotions and the atmosphere that is happening. The glare I give the person opposite me shows the audience the hatred I have for them. This links to the next scene as it is the court scene and i take the side of my dear friend, Antonio, going against Shylock

I play the price of morocco and I'm a funny and really addictive character to Portia I say my lines but I don't use my body to show what I am doing I need to improve on that a lot more by using my body language to show and also make my character more funny

When I am practicing my performance I wanted to over exaggerate myself because that would be alot more fun to watch for example when my scene starts and I start saying my lines I make them as funny as possible like I get on the ground when I say "some god direct my judgement" it just makes it amazingly funny because of Portias facial and body expressions that's the whole point to make the audience laugh that's what my character is meant to do if I don't do that then it won't be funny at all so I think that I have improved a lot in that
