DEBATE: Some problematic practices in O-camp are highly related to conventional understanding of Masculinity/Femininity

EXAMPLES:
-division of role/labor between "组爸“（“group father") and “组妈” ("group mother") (the one more likely to "yo" as a man? the one more likely to comfort as a woman?)
-"房game" or "room game", where individuals report on status, sex detail, etc
-water game, where camp shirt get wet and body shape exposed
-alcohol-drinking race
-"first impression": judging appearance (both male and female students)
-sports, e.g.take off clothes and do push-up(for guys); push-up above female students' body

MY REFLECTION: yes, o-camp is definitely about power: power difference between the senior and junior being the more obvious one(power from seniority). but gender is also a layer where power can be executed(yes we are talking about intersectionality already, and this is a very good point mentioned by Scarlett), and we just take so many things for granted: guys should be involved in fierce sports, every boy is willing to take off shirt and show their body in public, and boys as opposed to girls should be punished first in the game as they suppose to be "tougher"...on the other hand, while they won't be picked up for smoking water pipes and penalty, young women have to blend in by letting others
make judgement about their appearance, body shape, even sexual experience (great if you remember the gendered double standard on sexuality here! even greater if you think of the "homosocial bonds", admit it or not, quite a portion of that bonds is achieved through misogyny-related sharing in patriarchal setting..)

Question TO BE CONTINUED:
Why some "group father" in o-camp is called “兽父”（father beast)? what does this indicate ("beast" referring to the senior male student being cruel/playful/open/wild in the game designed?) why aren't there something like"兽母“？what will ppl think of a female "group mother" if she is as wild and straightforward as the "group father"? ...etc

The Myth About LFM: does their rising truly benefit gender equality?

The first myth I want to argue against is about the success of women’s economic power. In effect, purchasing power is not real power. The ability to pay not necessarily guarantee women the authority/power/rights in the related industry. In any industry, as long as the content/product provider and the ultimate beneficiaries of this industry are still mostly males, the increase in female consumers would not make a difference, rather they just make the male vested interest group more cunning and even stronger.

Another myth I want to argue against is about the females’ desiring subjectivity. Even though the rise of LFM and BL somehow proved that women can objectify men in return, by no means could this level of objectification be comparable with how deeply females are objectified by men in the same industry.

The difference mainly lies in two aspects:

Mostly those female fans are actually “making Gods” when chasing after male idols. Not like how men are objectifying female idols, the way women “objectify” a male idol is so gentle that it’s even fair to be called obsequious. In their minds, the idols are perfect, someone they fully trust, and they are willing to do anything for them.

The problem is, those male celebrities could never be the perfect “Gods” as in female fans’ fantasy. On the contrary, they are very likely to be the No.1 advocator of masculine hegemony and subjects of sexual exploitation on women, given their strong influence granted by those fans.

And what is worse is that, not only most female fans are unable to be aware of such masculine hegemony problem nested in their idols, but also, they tend to defend and justify the conduct of those celebrities who did something wrong. Those female fans, to show their “absolute loyalty” toward their idol, would become accomplices of such gender oppression.

The double-standard symptom still rules the entertainment industry. For example, in mainland China, a lot of male celebrities who were found to act immorally (cheating on their partner etc.) are currently still active in the industry and are still beloved by a huge group of fans, regardless of their ignominious records. We often heard something like “He just made a mistake that every man would make. It’s not a big deal” as a justification. As a defending argument. However, for female celebrities with similar situation, people normally refuse to grant them any tolerance. They are utterly discredited. E.g. CHEN He and LI Xiaolu.

Therefore, the rise of LFM and similar phenomenon is not guaranteed to have a positive effect on gender equality. Sometimes it even magnified the power of masculine hegemony.
