Starting from last month, I teach maths, science and English to 8 years old pupils in my birthtown, San Giovanni Rotondo, South Italy. 
Out of school, I like travelling and backing sweets!
I attend this course because I need suggestions and new ideas to build more interesting and cooperative lessons.

I'm sure that all of them like learning Maths by playing games or solving problems related to their daily life. That's why, when my lessons become to much abstract they get bored. 
When at the beginning of the year, I asked them which colour, or taste had Maths for them, the most gave "colourful and tasty" answers. So I think  that none of them really hate Maths, they only dislike our way to teach it. I noticed that my young pupils were not used to learn by doing and to reflect on the process they were carrying on (I teach in a primary school for the first time this year). They were still passive when I joined the class.
So what I tryed and try every day to do, in order to personalize and make the learning process more significant, is building for them or telling them some real or realistic situation, then they have to identify with and think and find possile solutions to the problems doing cooperative works.
We don't have an interactive whiteboard in our classroom, so, other times I must find "old" and collaborative games or arithmetical challenges to play Maths all together and, like all children of the world, they become very competitive and engaged. Pupils are cutting out food images from advertising sheets in order to find the best combination between buying everything is in the shopping list and spending not more than 10,00€. Moreover, they have to draw a receipt to show how much they spent and what they bought.
That is a cooperative way to apply the mathemathical thinking and problem solving stategy to a possible real situation, showing the use of the sum, multiplication and substraction. I have a classroom in which I can not even place the desks in order to facilitate the collaborative learning. My reflection is that also environment is important when we have to organise social activities. I think collaborative works are very useful.
