They are the first of many to come and Beowulf proves himself as an Epic Hero. Everyone had heard the stories he told and boasted about, but his defeats of two notorious monsters proved the stories true.

Beowulf, the Hero of Herot, fought the infamous monster Grendel in an attempt to save the Geats. No one had ever been able to defeat Grendel but Beowulf succeeded and was the hero of Herot. The battle was not over and Beowulf had the opportunity to make even more of a name for himself by defeating Grendel's enraged mother. He succeeded and had once again proved himself as the Epic Hero he had claimed to be.

It is very different from that of what the poem describes her as. In the movie she is seen as a gorgeous woman who sleeps with Beowulf and then gives birth the dragon.

The Epic Hero is seen when Beowulf defeats both Grendel and his mother without any weapons and saves Herot.

Battle of Good vs. Evil...

Grendel and his mother represent the "evil" within the story as they have been tormenting Herot for many years. Beowulf and the Geats are the "good"within the story and come to Herot and defeat Grendel and Grendel's mother.

In the book she is described as "the greedy she-wolf" (425), which is also a  kenning. In the book she is on the hunt for revenge because Beowulf killed her son, but he ends up killing her too. This is different from the movie because in the book she is a monster and in the movie she is a gorgeous woman.

He will not let you down, he will do whatever is necessary to keep harm from the people, ensuring the kingdom is protected, and bringing no shame to his people or king. Beowulf is someone who is praised and honored for his deeds, his strength, and that way he leads his life.

Also the battles show the elements of the constant battle between heaven and hell. Beowulf would be considered as an angel from heaven fighting a literal monster from below.

This is seen throughout Beowulf because he battles monsters and dragons. There is also magic present because Grendel has the power or magic of not being able to be destroyed or harmed by weapons. Another pagan element was that fame and honor was the only guarantee of immortality.
