Within this section of the epic, two of the major battles take place. They are the first of many to come and Beowulf proves himself as an Epic Hero. Everyone had heard the stories he told and boasted about, but his defeats of two notorious monsters proved the stories true.

Beowulf, the Hero of Herot, fought the infamous monster Grendel in an attempt to save the Geats. No one had ever been able to defeat Grendel but Beowulf succeeded and was the hero of Herot. The battle was not over and Beowulf had the opportunity to make even more of a name for himself by defeating Grendel's enraged mother. He succeeded and had once again proved himself as the Epic Hero he had claimed to be.

Julia White
