After Rockwood's accident she was diagnosed a c4 quadriplegic. A person with this spinal chord injury is able to move their face, neck, and head. They are able to move their shoulders a little but their body and legs are completely paralyzed.

On Sept. 3, 2001 she was driving on Interstate 5 from San Francisco

to Los Angeles. She then got in a car accident that left her

paralyzed from the waist down.

Spinal Cord

Their are 7 cervical vertebrae. During Rockwood's accident she damaged her 4th cervical vertebrae. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tissue so because Rockwood damaged her spinal cord it is now unable to trasmit signals to the brain and the rest of her body

Healing Process

Angela received stem cell treatments to help further her recovery in Portugal. These stem cells helped Angela's diseased cells repair themselves. People who can benefit from stem cell therapies include those with spinal cord injuries, heart disease, stroke, burns, cancer, etc. so she was the perfect candidate for this therapy.

A challenge Angela, along with any other paralyzed person will face, comes the struggle with lack of mobility. When the accident first happened, Angela could barely move her body. Over months of therapy, she regained feeling and movement in her arms, but sadly never her legs. Being in a wheelchair makes it hard for her to move around because not every place has ramps or easy accessibility for those in wheelchairs.

Another challenge any quadriplegic faces is lack of blood flow throughout their lower bodies. The lack of blood flow can create blood clots. Also, blood clots may not be obvious because they can form deep within veins and muscles. Some treatments to prevent or fix blood clots are usage of blood thinners, support hoses, and inflatable pumps can be used to make the blood flow easier.

Quadriplegia is usually caused by a spinal cord injury,

but it can also be caused by a brain stem lesion,

or spinal meningitis. In Angela's case it was

caused by a spinal cord injury.
