I didn’t understand why it would be in English if most of them couldn’t understand it. Also don’t get why they said used sign language if you don’t speak the same language, but that’s another language that both probably don’t really know well?? I also noticed they put immediate pressure to be self supported.

I like that they explain what to expect and how to do certain things. However, I would worry that not many people would be able to understand what they are saying.

I believe this had good intentions and was intended to help people understand and adapt to American culture. However, it does contain several parts that can be perceived as rude and disrespectful, especially considering that it’s in English.

i think that it's a little passive aggressive but i also think that they did a good job at explaining things in simple terms so that they can clearly understand what is needed to be done

It seems like it’s talking down to the refugees. At many times they talk like western culture is superior to the culture of Southeast Asia.

Practically a step-by-step manual of how to “assimilate” into modern American life. Quite concise but ironically in English so I’d guess it wasn’t as effective.

I think the idea of the documents was a good idea but the execution of it maybe wasn’t completely there. For example with it being in English and not many people were probably able to understand this.

The entire document is ordered from the start of the journey to the end, which makes a little easier to understand. The hard thing about this document is that it is in English so it would be hard for those who don’t know English to understand it. The nice thing about it is that there were translators who would be able to help, but again, it would be nice to have the document in another language that way it can be used as a reference. It would be hard to remember all these details through a conversation, so having it in another language would help a lot to those who do not know English.

The way they wrote this guide was very unthoughtful. I don’t understand why they didn’t write it in different languages for different people, or at least try to find other people to write it in different languages. If I didn’t understand english and I read this, I would’ve probably never looked again.

The book gives off the sense of my way or the highway. Stating how if you don’t do it this way or how it doesn’t matter about what customs you practice beforehand. In western countries they do it this way so now you have to do it this way.

Many Hmong were unable to read and write. Most of these photos don't really give much context much making it harder for them to understand even if it is translated like it is at the top.
