During the middle ages Christians believed Jews were associated with the devil and were out to eliminate christianity, they also believed Jews were guilty for the ills of the world witch lead to them thinking Jews were the cause of the black death plague . because of this Jews were treated very poorly had no real power. in September 1348 Jews were burnt to death in cities throughout Germany and were not allowed access to many trades and jobs such as weaving, tailoring and goldsmithing. during this time Jews also had to wear badges to mark their separation and they suffered persecution and expulsion from towns and cities, and seizure of their property.

blaming Jews for the black death plague~

Origins of the Black Death

The Black Death is an epidemic plague, a disease caused by the bacteria carried from fleas to rats. In October 1347, 1 of the 7 Italian trading ships (the genoese) returned from its trading voyage around china and the black sea. Unfortunately the men on the ship had picked up the deadly disease and had officially brought it to Europe when the ship first docked in Messina, Sicily there were already plenty of dead and suffering men on board the ship and from here the deadly disease spread. In 1347 the plague spread from Asia to Sicily wiping out most of Italys population, in 1348 it had spread through the hole of Italy, France and Spain, by early 1349-1350 it had spread throughout the hole of England. because of this Europe had lost over one third of its population.

black death migration across medieval Europe ~

when the black death plague struck, people all around Europe knew their death was coming, in this time disease effected more than a third of Europe's population, from the wealthy high end families perspective: (pope, king)they thought to be effected the least because they had money to buy good luck charms and pay for what was thought to be cures. where as landless peasants could not afford the prevention treatments and blessings from the local priests and would contract it straight away. because no one knew the cause and actual cures for the black death, all of the effected population dies anyways.

wealthy man spreading incense and clearing the air so he doesn't contract the black death disease while peasants suffered and died~

during the time of the black death communities and towns were over whelmed with the amount and the numbers of the deaths so the towns set up mass burials to cope with the large numbers and so the streets would not be infested and covered by infected contagious bodies. large groups of bodies were either burnt or buried under ground, some of them were thrown into local rives and lakes to prevent the smell, after the bodies had been placed into the space where they would be buried then the town local priest would come and bless the bodies and say prayers.

priest blessing infected man before they are buried~

prevention and treatment

The people of the Medieval Ages were extremely uneducated about diseases and cleanliness. Many people thought the disease was caught through the air, so they would burn incense in their houses like juniper and rosemary to try to prevent infected air or they would dunk their handkerchiefs in aromatic oils to cover their nose and mouth from the air. Another common remedy was the cure of sound., where the sound of church bells was thought to be a cure,Sometimes cannons were fired because they were so loud. Local fellows made a lot of money off people during the plague by selling and marketing all sorts of talismans, charms, and spells for protection. in this time Pope Clement VI, feared for his own safety, had the idea to sit between two large fires to keep the air pure.(The plague bacteria is actually killed by heat, so this was actually a good method.) other prevention's of the black death include religion, rotten trade, leaches , rubbing bare with an alive chicken and killing Jews.

lady burning incenses to cure the infected air ~

in the late 1340s people were very uneducated and didn't know too much about medicines, cues and preventions, because of this the black death had a huge impact on effected people and their families. when the black death first impacted the society it was a massive shock nothing like this had ever happened before there had never been a plague like this, when the infected people first discovered they had the black death it would of come as a shock to them . they would then develop all the symptoms including, swelling/ occurring egg sized lumps, vomiting and fever, bleeding underneath skin and dark patches on body, muscle pains and rotting lims, with in a week of experiencing these symptoms the disease would take over their body and they would soon die.

2 men experiencing the black death~
