Written Questions is a set of questions where we expect the learner to research and write up the answer.

I need to research the topics before hand and relate the questions to the criteria. Time consuming, more marking, feedback and validation.

Written questions: useful for taking learner's needs into consideration as some learners feel more comfortable doing written but there is less scope for individualisation and to expand on topic. Harder for stretch and challenge opportunities.

Useful to standardise and gauge specific knowledge. Can be adapted by taking into account learner's prior knowledge, giving them opportunities to document and comment on own practice. Using written questions as a starting point to base a professional discussion on.

If we are remote it can be used online and face to face could be used on phones or printed out

Professional Discussion

A professional discussion can be used in many different ways. The way I plan a professional discussion is to get the learner to choose a topic they would like to research for example safeguarding. We would then look over the criteria together and begin the teaching, for example if they have not heard of legislation before we can begin to look at them. I will then write a detailed description of what I want the learner to research with resource provided such a website links and serious case reviews. I will also ask the learner to speak to the staff at their work to gain knowledge and access policies. We will then set a date with the learner and the manger as a target to have all the research completed. All this information will go onto a monthly report then sent to manger. Before having the professional discussion I will check over the criteria and make notes on what questions I may need to ask. I will let the learner talk through their notes and tell me what they learnt about the subject before asking questions at the end to verify or expand there explanation. the strengths of a PD is that the learner has the opportunity to talk in detail and answer questions to back up knowledge. The weakness can be that a learner can copy of internet to get knowledge and it can be are to identify plagiarism when a learner is speaking. To adapt this for each learner, I can ask individual criteria questions or change the wording of questions to make it more relatable to practice. Likewise we can upload their notes which the learner can talk through which may be better for learner who are nervous.

A case study is an assessment that looks in-depth at a particular case, individual, group, setting, situation, organisation. It gathers information to look deeper into the chosen issue and to explore this over a period of time, an example in my sector:

-Completing a study on a chosen child to see how the children's development can be supported.

-Initially the person conducting the study will complete an initial assessment, identify and area of learning that is lower than others and then choose that area to focus on.

-They will then research and taking into account the individual child's needs, interests and the environment to come up with a theory to how they will support this child to progress with their development.

-They will produce activities on a weekly basis and they will evaluate those activities, adapting where needed.

-Over several weeks they will gather the evidence by completing observations of the activity.

-At the end of the study another assessment will be completed and this will allow the person to evaluate if the original theory they had been successful or not, look at what worked well and what didn't. See what they learnt from the study as well as what the child learnt.

-They will then put together all of the evidence from gaining permission, initial assessment, all about me form, activity plans completed, Observations completed, final assessment, Introduction and a Final Evaluation.

Strengths of this are that it can be a really in depth assessment method that if conducted well can cover a huge amount of criteria, those in early years can complete a lot of this in the room and on the job and will be a great tool to use in the future. Weakness is that it can take a huge amount of time to complete, it can be very challenging for some people and if not taught properly become very overwhelming and confusing. It can also take the assessor a lot of time to mark and check.

This can be adapted by making it a shorter study if needed or a longer study. It can be adapted and tailored to suit the specific study that wants to be completed. It can be broken down into small bitesize chunks for those that do find it overwhelming.

A research task is a chance for some independent learning. Research tasks are good for learners to go and learn about a topic of their or the assessors choice.

one thing we do in my course is set the learner off to research the changes in the highway code, for example the room you have to leave vulnerable road users and the rule changes off when a pedestrian is at a junction and you should let them cross before manoeuvring. we use the gov.co.uk website.

a strength can be it helps in problem solving skills, and helps with critical thinking and knowledge acquisition skills.

A weakness can be that without any guidance learners can go down the rabbit hole and off task or get information from incorrect sources.

different ways for the evidence to be provided can be verbal, written or presented. Finding evidence can be from internet or physical books from resources given to the leaner
