The oldest and largest pyramid is called the Great Pyramid. It was built as a tomb for the Pharaoh Khufu. Its original height was 481 feet tall and still stands today. It took approximately 20 years to build. Next to the Great Pyramid is three smaller pyramids, constructed for Khufu’s queens. The second pyramid was built for Khufu’s son, Khafre. This pyramid contains the Great Sphinx. The third and smallest pyramid was built by Pharaoh Menkaure; This pyramid is only 218 feet tall, however it is the most complex.

The Pharaohs themselves didn’t build the pyramids, they had skilled Egyptian laborers build them. The pyramids are more than just burial grounds for pharaohs, they are intricate pieces of art that depict how Ancient Egyptians lived. They contain paintings, sculptures, and inscriptions that gives insight into their life, rituals, and practices. These pyramids are still a great mystery, but many people believe that the sloped sides of the pyramid were built to represent the sun’s rays, and the triangle shape allows the pharaohs to climb into the sky to their afterlife.
(link to video source)

In Pharos: The Lighthouse of Alexandria, the author claims that in 903 AD “Ibn-Rusta estimated the height of the tower to be 450 feet. It was approached by three hundred steps, each of which had an opening to the sea.” The lighthouse is “the [second] tallest structure in the world built by human hands,” after the pyramids of Giza. It was said to have been made of white stone, with mirrors to extenuate the fire lit atop. It was truly worthy of being considered one of the wonders of the world.
(link to image source)

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was built between 300-280 BCE, under the rule of Ptolemy I and his son Ptolemy II. He had this immense lighthouse built not only to help guide ships into the Alexandria harbor, but to showcase his power. For the 1600 years the lighthouse stood, it helped many ships come into the harbor and made Alexandria one of the leading trading ports for Egypt.

They used the most durable material of all, stone, to construct marvelous tombs, temples and monuments, looking to achieve more than what was thought possible in their time and now.
