" A debt is an obligation owed by one party (the debtor) to a second party (the creditor)" (pg. 7). A debt is usually created with the expectation that it will be repaid, and in some debt circumstances it is expected to repay the amount with an addition of interest cost. A debt could be on credit card balances, a home mortgage, car loans, and personal lines of credit. Debt allows people to buy things when they don't have all the money at the time of the purchase.

The first step in taking control of your debt is to create a budget. By doing this you will be able to figure out when you can pay back your debt and how to stay out of debt. One should start by listing their income, then their fixed expense like car or house payments. Next, identify the extra expenses like groceries, entertainment, and supplies. There are programs and online options for helping people create a budget.
