The Dust Bowl was an environmental problem that consisted of severe dust storms that ravaged the Midwestern and Southern Plains states during the great depression. A combination of drought, poor agricultural practices, and high winds led to massive erosion of topsoil, creating "black blizzards" that displaced millions and led to crop shortages that impacted the Great Depression.

The Soil Conservation Service, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and the Farm Security Administration were established to teach and subsidize soil-conserving farming techniques like crop rotation, strip cropping, and terracing, while the Shelterbelt Project planted over 200 million trees to act as windbreaks. The U.S government addressed the dust bowl as an issue that needs to be addressed for the future of agriculture. The government led projects that worked towards restoration. The return of rainfall helped the government restore this large area.
