The toad's foster parents are worried that not only is he a toad, but their family is poor while the family whose daughters he wants to marry is very rich, and it would not have been socially acceptable to marry someone who is different than you or holds a different position in society. Additionally, there is a tension created when the rich father is worried about displeasing the gods but not marrying one of this daughters to the toad, showing that it was important that a marriage not only be approved by both families but also by the gods, who were greatly respected.
