Downtown Letdown by Louden Swain

This has been my go to song for years. It's the song that understands me as a person and my struggles. The band, Louden Swain, which I have mentioned earlier is one of my musical and emotional outlets. There's a quote in the song, "The moon is mine and I've had enough. I think I will rise. I will rise up." And it has really spoken to me recently. I've been living with General and Social Anxiety and recently, Depression. Things like this stand out to me. It helps to hear it from the person who struggles like I do. It helps to know someone understands you, and when you love a group of amazing people (talking about Swain again) you really hold onto that advice. Another quote from the songs is "I've been walking around with my head hanging down and I really don't think that I should." and I gotta say, that doesn't sound possible at the moment, but the song makes me think. It makes me want to try to lift my head up and "rise up".

Fandom

These four guys mean a hell of a lot to me. For the past 6 years I have been in a fandom for the show Supernatural. I started going to the conventions in 2013 and now it's a yearly tradition. (I'm going to my next one this upcoming Thursday) And there, you meet other fans, watch panels, and get to know the actors on this show. For a long time I was there for the main actors and kinda liked the band that would play in-between panels, but as of last year around June of 2017, I never realized how important they were in my life. These four guys in the picture below are in a band called Louden Swain. They would shape me to love myself again. Rob, the handsome dude in the hat, was an actor on Supernatural at one point but there's a lot more to him than just being a celebrity. He has battled with depression and anxiety, and has had a pretty crappy upbringing. On top of this all he suffered from a stroke in 2013 and the doctors weren't sure if he was going to survive. He did though and he was faced with a new outlook on life and came with the message to live every second to the fullest. He channels his emotions into his music and the words and the lines he writes are poetic and beautiful. I have had the pleasure of meeting this band several times and watching them perform live, and with these opportunities, Rob, Billy (guitarist), Michael (bassist), and Stephen (drummer), have gotten to know me. These conventions have gone beyond just seeing friends and meeting actors. It's turned into a place where I can truly experience 100% acceptance and 100% love. Through this fandom and these events and these songs, I have come to terms with my sexuality as a pansexual woman, have met people that inspire me on the daily, and have helped me realize that struggling with mental health issues is nothing to be ashamed of, and I can't wait to see them in five more days.

I don't have many positive things to say about this school. It was the time in my life where I felt the most alone, where my anxiety and depression sky rocketed, and where I did the worst in my academic career. I can say that this place shaped me into a more mature individual. There's people here who I have met who say things that actually sound like it's from the mouth of a six year old. There's people here who have no concept of privilege and respect. I have learned that I am not like this and I don't fit in at this school at all. I am not the 4.0 GPA student. I am not straight. I am not wealthy. I am not catholic. This school gave me a perspective of all of these things in one saturated section in the heart of La Cañada. I have found that I am okay not being the stereotype and that my group of friends are the outcasts, and the people who don't really fit in. We turn being outcasted and different into our personal motivation to make people feel okay in being different and not of the "norm". This place did give me a stronger connection with my best friend though and I'm grateful for that.

In the past year or two we became incredibly close and there's nothing I wouldn't do for her. She inspires to love myself, be who I am, and has made me stronger. She pushes me to take my anger towards injustice and channel it into making a difference in the world.

She always has advice during the toughest of situations, always knows to make me smile or laugh until I can't breathe, and even in certain situations she knows when silence is more appropriate. Though we go through rough patches, the biggest one at the moment being my school habits, I know she's always here for me and I know she will love and support me to the day I die. My mom is everything to me.

Last October I passed my driver's test and got my license to drive. This experience took a lot of time and practice and now I take myself on mini adventures every weekend. I get lost on streets I don't know and have some quality me time by doing so. Having my driver's license has opened my eyes to my own individuality and I didn't expect it to bring as much happiness into my life as I thought.

Though this event isn't here yet, I know it will be a huge stepping stone in my life. I have experienced and learned so many things revolving around acceptance and human rights while at FSHA and I can say it has prepared me mentally for my upcoming journeys. I feel I learned this on my own and through the school I have matured and been able to make my own opinions or political statements. My graduation will be the final push into individualism I am beyond excited for. I am excited to meet all different types of people, especially the like minded ones.

Religion is a really touchy subject for me. I am not straight. I am pansexual. This means I am attracted to all genders and sexes no matter the identity or genitalia. This doesn't mean I'm attracted to everyone single person I encounter. This just means if I am attracted to someone, then I am. The quote is how I feel. Religion is a strict place where in my eyes you have to be this ideal person to fit in. For me that is white, heterosexual, obeying, and conservative as hell. Though I have learned this is not what religion, specifically catholicism, is, I still feel that it is from what I was exposed to in middle school. Religion is not apart of my life at all but it is something I like to challenge and it is something I enjoy criticizing when someone who is negative crosses my path. I was ashamed to be pan, and at the time, bisexual, because I thought being like that was wrong. I have met so many LGBT+ people that are like me and are religious or not and those people have made me a stronger individual, and with the absence of religion, I believe I was able to be more comfortable with myself in terms of who I am sexually.

I think is is what really drew me into catholicism and what really killed it for me. I am a really deep thinker and I'm a super empathetic person. I try and put all of my senses into things. I knew Jesus wanted this of me, to put my whole heart in, but I wasn't sure why devote catholics couldn't pick up on the same message. I strayed after this and decided that I could spread that type of message on my own.

Even though I am not Catholic I do think that this is true. I think that all of these emotions and actions are beyond just waking up and feeling like you need to do good. I feel it is a deep and settled thing within someone. I believe you can be born a good or a bad person. It depends along the way also who or what is teaching you. I found these values through my mom, actors and singers that inspire me, and my friends who push me to love myself and others more than anything.
