- Tinfoil, cardboard, cricket cage, spring water, tape, and 8 crickets were used to set up the experiments.
- We placed a base of cardboard on the bottom of the cage.
- In the light vs. no light experiment, there was a piece of cardboard placed inside the cage to split it in half while leaving a gap at the bottom and one side was covered in tinfoil.
- 4 crickets were placed in the light and the other 4 were placed in the dark.
- Over a span of 10 minutes, every 2.5 minutes was recorded of how many crickets were on each side.
- In the moisture vs. no moisture experiment, there was a piece of cardboard placed on the bottom and a piece to split in half with a gap towards the bottom for the crickets.
- One half was wet with spring water while the other was left dried with 4 crickets in one half and 4 crickets in the other half.
- Over a period of 10 minutes, we recorded every 2.5 minutes how many crickets were on both sides.
Statistical Test:
In this experiment we used chi-square and p-value to test our hypothesis. We tested whether or not crickets have a preference given specific environments. The environments were light/dark and moisture/no moisture.
Yes, any other student in the class will be able to replicate the experiment exactly. They should use the same crickets from the box we got our crickets from. They should also use the medium sized cage with the black lid, as that was the environment our crickets were tested in.

- If the crickets are given the choice of light or dark, then they will gravitate towards the dark because crickets are nocturnal and chirp in the dark.
- If the crickets are given the choice of a moisturized or dry environment, then they will gravitate towards the moisturized environment because crickets are usually found near areas where there is water.

The crickets had a preference for the moisture environment, but did not have a preference in a light or dark environment. In figure 1, each trial varied. For example, one trial would show that the crickets preferred the dark, while in the next trial, the results would be the opposite. There was no trend in the preference for light and dark shown in figure 1.

Light vs Dark
- During our experiment we assumed that the crickets would be drawn more so to the dark than the light but we found no variation.
- During this experiment we observed the crickets peering under the divider in the middle and often darting out and back into the dark.
- Although we observed that they would typically come out in groups of 3-4.
- All 8 were never on the same side.
-Our hypothesis was not supported by the data we acquired in this experimental design we found equal distribution to each side.
Wet vs Dry
- During this experiment we assumed that the crickets would be more attracted to the damp side. Which we found to be correct.
- We actually observed the crickets drinking the water that we sprayed on the damp side.
- We still found distribution between sides but we found that the damp side was more favored by the crickets.
- Our hypothesis was supported in this experimental design it can be observed in Figure 2. and is supported by our Chi square value and P- value.
Why this matters:
- In future experiments we may be able to test whether or not our hypothesis was supported via the P- value.
