Well they are there to warning us, informs us, and yes wake us up. 

Types of alarms and their use-
Fire alarms are there to warn us of a fire as it's in the name. In some places you are required to have one for health and safety i.e. you would find them in homes, offices, stores and other places to where a fire could happen.

Burglar alarms. They are found pretty much everywhere. Homes, offices, banks, stores anywhere there are things of value. With some burglar alarms they ring the police if they detected someone breaking in.
