Originally referred to as the Cotton States and International Exposition, the Atlanta Exposition was an international fair which sought to create a good image of the South in which there exists no slavery, no plantations, and a shift away from the ways of traditional agricultural business. The South became known as the New South during this time period as they slowly wanted to shift into a new technological and innovative society to gain better relations with the North and other countries across the globe. The North which had been wary with the South due to its use of slavery for many years, and overall race relations in the South compared to the North.

As a result, the Atlanta Exposition was a fair which sought to open trade between the New South and South American nations. The New South also wanted to showcase their new products open for trade to the North to demonstrate their change in mindset from the days of their originally agriculturally based market.

Overall, The Atlanta Exposition of 1895 gained popularity because of its attractive opportunities for trade, various exhibits, and most notably Booker T. Washington's "Atlanta Compromise" speech. The "Atlanta Compromise" speech changed the way race relations were viewed across the US.
