The beginning of the book takes place in New York, in a diner with Jeannette talking to her mother about the truth of their past(1-5). This is important because it shows us how ashamed of her family Jeannette really was, and that she didn't know what to say or how to act when people asked her about her parents, so she would just lie. I think the reason she chose this scene to start with was because it gave us an idea of how she felt about her family, and what she went through growing up that led her to <del>wright </del><del> </del>write this book.

Jeannette then started the first part of the book with the words "I was on fire!"(Walls 9). The selection of these words suggest that Walls wanted to capture the audiences attention right away. Starting out with the words I was on fire will cause the reader to wonder what is going on and it will get them to continue reading.

Billy Deel and the Tragedy

After Phoenix the family moved to Battle Mountain where Jeannette meets a young boy named Billy Deel. Jeannette then decides she really doesn't like Billy, and that he is no good. Billy is upset by this and then shouts to her as she walks away from him " guess what? I raped you!"(Walls 87). This scene is important because it shows us that Walls can be trusted as an author. In this book we don't just see the mistakes her parents or siblings made, we also see the mistakes she made. This is important because it tells us that even though she could have left out the parts where she was guilty she didn't, she told the truth.

Welch West Virginia is where Rex grew up, and when they could no longer live in Phoenix that is where the family moved to. When they arrived in Welch the kids met Rex's mother Erma. Not too long after they met her, the kids' parents went back to Phoenix to gather the rest of their stuff. When the kids parents left Brian asked Jeannette"Do you think they will come back?"(Walls 145). Not too long after the kids parents headed beck to Phoenix Erma became very irritable. One day she took Brian into her room where she tried to rape him (146). Jeannette could have left this traumatic event out of her story, but she probably left in because it was one clip that showed the loyalty her and her siblings had with each other.

While living in Welch the kids began to go to school. While there the kids all got bullied. One kid took it upon himself to pick on both Jeannette and Brian, his name was Ernie. Ernie road up on his bike with a group of his friends all holding rocks ready to throw them at the Walls family. Brian and Jeannette had had enough of Ernie and his friends pick on them so they decided to fight back. They climbed up to the roof of their house where they had made a catapult filled with rocks ready to launch at Ernie and his friends. They decided that because there where to many of them they would just aim for Ernie (Walls 165-66). This scene shows us that Jeannette and Brian where not going to be afraid of Ernie and his friends. They were going to defend themselves and their home/family.

After Jeannette got out of the hospital her dad didn't think it was safe in Tucson so they would move to Las Vegas. As the family is heading back to the house to pack up their stuff they hit some train tracks and take a sharp turn causing Jeannette to be thrown from the vehicle. It took her parents a little while to realize that she had been thrown out of the car(Walls 30-31). This makes her afraid that her parents won't be coming back for her, she was about four or five years old when this happened. This scene showed the lack of faith and hope that she had in her parents to come back and get her.

Jeannette is getting ready to leave Welch and head to New York. Brian the last couple of months kept telling her how long until she would be gone. The day she does leave, her father takes her to the bus station, while there he gave her the knife they used to go demon hunting(Walls 240-241). This scene shows that her father doesn't want her to leave, but he knows that she can't stay. The fact that Jeannette is leaving Welch on her own to go live with her sister in New York shows bravery. You have to have serious confidence that you will be alright on your own, just you and your sister by yourself with nobody to help you.

After Rex died in the hospital the family had pretty much disbanded until thanksgiving. The family had had a toast to Rex(Walls 288). What the family didn't realize was that Rex was the reason they had stayed together for so long. Yet Rex was also the reason the family disbanded in the first place. This scene with them all together toasting Rex shows the loyalty they all had for each other.

It's Jeannette's birthday and she only wanted one thing but it was a big thing that she would be asking for. When her dad asked her what she wanted for her birthday She said "Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?"(Walls 116-118). This scene shows that Jeannette wanted her dad to stop, but what she didn't realize is that sometimes a person makes a promise they can't keep, and asking someone to stop drinking for a birthday present when they really don't want to. Well in the end they will only disappoint you. Rex managed to stay sober for about a month, but eventually he fell of the wagon and was back to drinking. This scene is important because it shows us that she had hope that her dad could be a better father and live a better life then the one he was living while he was drinking .
