In 1775, the Continental Congress named him the commander in chief of the Continental Army, which defeated the British in the American Revolution. He had previously served as an officer in the French and Indian War. In 1787, he was presiding officer over the Constitutional Convention, but participated little in the debates. In 1789, the Electoral College chose Washington to be the nation’s first president. While reluctant at first wanting to retire in his home in Mount Vernon, he agreed to create the standards of a new nation. After two terms in office, Washington chose to step down; and the power of the presidency was peacefully passed to John Adams.

His resilience was especially evident when he lost more battles than he won, but continued fighting with great efforts. His winning strategies led to great victories at the Battle of Trenton and Yorktown. Washington was admired by both politicians and the public, causing him to be elected for president in 1789.
Washington faced the nation’s first foreign and domestic crises, maintaining the United States’ neutrality in foreign affairs. He did not become subjected by divisions of political parties. He is the only president who had a universal mandate to lead. After accepting this position, he helped set formal and informal precedents for future presidents. He also helped shape the office’s future role and powers because he believed in having a balance.
