The DEI working group’s January/February issue of Every Voice News has the special theme of renewals and fresh starts. We invite all our faculty, staff, and students to share their traditions, ceremonies, stories, or even short quotes that center around starting refreshed and renewed.

I love reflection exercises about the past year-- there are lots of great ones online, I sometimes use the Susannah Conway "unraveling the year" (it's a free pdf!) to reflect on what I'm proud of from the last year, what was surprising, etc. It's so illuminating, too, to reread previous years. The perspective can be helpful-- realizing what you worried about three years ago never came to pass, for example. :)

I really like the “one little word” concept. Choose a word and live it for the year. One year my word was “commit” and that meant so many things such as commit to my health or growing my leadership. Last year, my word was “no.” I didn’t live that one too well =\. I haven’t figured out my word for this year yet, but I’ve been thinking about “open” and trying to be open to ideas, relationships, etc. But I’m also considering “collaborate” or “include.” We will see...
A tradition that my mother and I started years ago was an "end-of-cycle" type ceremony. In aligning largely with the winter solstice (but not on an exact date), we would spend some time individually writing down lists of things we felt we were working on. Maybe good or bad, maybe just layers of ourselves that we wanted to shed, or parts of our consciousness we wanted to amplify. Once the writing was done, we would gather it up and burn it in the yard in the evening, letting the smoke take all of it up and out to the universe. In this way, we were attempting to start a new year with a more intentional, clean slate. She has since passed away, but I try to carry on the tradition as a way of embracing my own evolution. It helps me stay somewhat grounded and positive, and let go of things I don't need. anymore.
