The extramarital affair leads to alienation of Ben from his family and eventually leads to Ben not only losing Janey, but his wife as well. Ben's infidelity leads to other members of his family trying to desperately fill a void that the lack of attention and affection from Ben has left them with the attempt to find love and excitement in their lives.

In the midst of a terrifying blizzard during the 1970s, Rick Moody depicts the convergence of a Suburban family into a gang of adulterers obsessed with drugs and sex. Moody conveys the Hood's only daughter, Wendy, as a person with a manic personality, manipulating others theough dangerous intelligence and determination. Wendy remains a static character as her manic personality is revealed, impacting the neighbor's boy, Sandy Williams, as well as the members of her own household, conveying that one's actions impact their loved ones through the realization that the person they thought they knew is a person who never existed.

The Ice Storm by Rick Moody is an extended metaphor, satirising American life and culture in the 70s. Elena Hood is portrayed as the wife of Benjamin Hood- the main protagonist who undergoes an affair throughout the novel with Janie Williams- the next door neighbour. Elena struggles with her identity as a woman and age; as her relationship and intimacy with her husband decreases. Through her husbands transgression, Elena begins to live freely and realises that life should not be wasted on the trivial things.

In the novel, The Life of Pi, Yann Martel introduces an Indian boy named Pi, who grows up in India surrounded by an abundance of animals because his father owns a zoo. Not long into his life, his family decides to leave India and sail to Canada because they were afraid of being politically and religiously opressed. Tragedy strikes and their ship sinks, drowning his entire family and many animals. Pi has to quickly adapt to his situation, as he is alone at sea only being accompanied by a wild tiger. This pivotal moment helps to morally shape Pi's character because he is forced to grow up and fend for his life to survive.

In contrast to his father, Oknokwo takes on many roles including farmer, father and leader of his clan while Okonkwo's father who was a weak and dishonorable man who died a shameful death. The shock from the cultural collision impacts Okonkwo the most because he feels as if he is unable to keep up with is society, as it is constantly changing in the midst of European imperialism. Causing Okonkwo to deteriorate mentally and emotionally due to the fact that he see himself as a leader who is failing to represent his culture in a positive way.

Wendy is a prime example of this change, beginning the story as a proper and innocent young woman and ending it as a sexual deviant and a drug user.
