However, if you are not sure how much the good piece is worth, it should definitely be a specialist - because laymen can make more damage than repair with wrong materials or too aggressive paints.

Good preparation is essential because it saves a lot of time and money. For example, a list can be made on which all the necessary tools and materials are available. Another tip is to create a to-do list. Then all steps in the appropriate order should be noted so that nothing can be forgotten. It is also advisable to take a photo of the object before restoring it so that it can be correctly reassembled afterwards.

The restoration itself should be done step by step. However, the right procedure depends on the condition and type of furniture. But there are also work steps that are independent of it. First, the function should always be checked, because it can be found out exactly what needs to be repaired. Hang doors? Are the drawers easy to pull out or do they stay hanging?

Common signs of aging include, for example, loose joints that have deflred over time and become unstable. If so, the cracks should be resegreased. In the open joints suitable woods or veneers are fitted pass- and press-tight. It should be noted that not only the wood is the same, but that the age and the grain of the furniture are as similar as possible. Once the first step of the restoration is done and the piece of furniture is stable and functional again, the second step follows - the surface.

It may be necessary to remove old paint and paint layers to re-emerge the original, natural wood texture. There are different possibilities. No matter which method is used, always remove all metal fittings at the beginning. One approach is the chemical stripping of the old lacquer coating. Here, the mordant is applied to the piece of furniture and then abraded with terry towels or coarse steel wool again.

A must with chemical stripping are good ventilation of the workplace as well as the wearing of protective gloves and protective goggles. Since the stripping pollutes the environment and health, the majority of the paint should be removed with a special scraper blade and only the leftovers are pickled. The pickling is also recommended only for solid pine, as other types of wood may discolour through the lye.
