If violence begins with stressful thoughts in the mind, then peace begins with silence in the mind. According to the American Institute of Stress, 44 percent of Americans report feeling more stressed than they did five years ago. Just as we need to shower, eat and exercise on a daily basis, we need to practice healthy ways to release our stress on a daily basis.

2) Perform Acts of Kindness

"Several years ago, my father’s station wagon broke down on a deserted road. A stranger offered him a lift to the nearest gas station to pick up a spare part. As my father began walking back to his car, the stranger circled around and offered him a ride back. When my father offered to pay the stranger for his kindness, the fellow replied, “Just pay it forward. I know you’ll find a way to help someone else.”
3) Create Work-Life Balance

Finding work-life balance is like riding a bicycle. At times you need to a lean a bit more to the left and at times to the right. Almost instinctively, you know (or will soon figure out) how to maintain your balance without falling.

Enough has been written about the event itself that I don’t feel the need to rehash the horrific details or postulate what could have driven a human being to do such a thing (whether or not in light of mental illness, albeit that the presence or absence of such an illness plays a large role in how this event is interpreted).

Instead, I want to focus on some positive ways to promote peace in our badly broken world. Here are twenty ideas – some of which originated in my own brain, while others were culled from organizations (and credit is given where it is due). I would love to hear your thoughts regarding what else we can do to try to prevent violence and cultivate peace in our fragile world.

1. Make a personal commitment to nonviolence.

2. When you see someone in trouble, whether he or she is lost, confused, upset, or has fallen, don’t act like you don’t see the person – provide some help.

3. Show a child how to achieve calmness through deep breathing.

4. Show a child how to be kind to animals.

5. Show a child how to be kind to vulnerable people – the homeless, those with physical or cognitive disabilities, older people, and anyone else that appears different to the child.

6. Speak out against prejudice and discrimination when you see it.

As we have seen, the number of war victims varies hugely between different wars; whereas 1,200,000 died during the the Korean War (1950–1953), other wars had 'just' 1,000 victims. For this reason, statistics on the number of wars should not be considered without information on the size of these conflicts.

The following figure shows that the overall number of ongoing conflicts each year has increased, as compared to the immediate post-WWII period. This increase however only relates to civil conflicts within states. Conflicts related to the expansion or defence of colonial empires ended with decolonisation. Conflicts between states have almost ceased to exist.

. The decline of the absolute number of battle deaths is visualized in the following graph that shows global battle deaths per year by world region. There are three marked peaks in war deaths since then: the Korean War (early 1950s), the Vietnam War (around 1970), and the Iran-Iraq and Afghanistan wars (1980s). War scholars refer to our current era as the “long peace.” But are we really getting along any better? A new study argues it will take another 100 years to see whether we are—or whether our relative peace is just the middle of a statistical blip.

To find out whether we are really in the midst of a period of true harmony, computer scientist Aaron Clauset at the University of Colorado in Boulder plotted data from The Correlates of War Project’s data set, widely used in political science. The database includes the year of onset and number of battle deaths for 95 interstate conflicts between 1823 and 2003. The Crimean War, for example, kicked off in 1853 and eventually killed about 264,000 soldiers in battle.
World War II killed more than 16.6 million. And the Yom Kippur War killed some 14,400 soldiers in 1973. Data on civil wars and nonstate actors, such as terrorist groups, were not included in this analysis.
