It is somewhat consistent with how certain humans behave. Some people are abusive like Rasheed, especially older men who were conditioned to think that they were superior to their wives.

Rasheed was only kind to his two wives while he was trying to have a son. When Mariam couldn't give him a child or when Lalia first gave birth to a girl, he suddenly turned to being abusive. Starting off with little thing before resorting to all out beatings, this behavior is similar to the behavior of most abusers. Only once Zalmai was born did he have patience for anyone in the house.

Rasheed is shown to be very aggressive in some moments but then very forgiving in others. For example, when Mariam didn't cook the rice enough he made her eat rocks. However, when Mariam didn't clean the house to his standard she was just given the silent treatment.

Thoughts were never described, however, when Rasheed would be trying to get them pregnant, he would be kind to them. However, if they did anything slightly wrong then he would nearly kill them.
