Top horizontal bar navigation
This is the most popular for modern websites. It has limited possibilities due to the spacing limitations. westherts.ac.uk

Vertical Side navigation
This is a big thing because it doesn't limit the number of links to places you can have, there are endless possibilities to this because there is not a limit to how long the web page needs to be. www.youtube.com.

Tabs navigation
This is used less than the other two, this is the format where by you use tabs which are per-loaded (usually) to navigate, hence it is quicker. More designing goes into making these. http://gap.westherts.ac.uk/explore/Pages/default.aspx

Breadcrum Navigation
This is where it displays the sections of the website you came from to get to where you are. This is used on many VLE's. https://westherts.itslearning.com/DashboardMenu.aspx?LocationType=Personal&DashboardType=MyPage

Search navigation
This is used by search engines who find information from other websites, and have not got their own saved information on the search engines website. www.google.com

Fly out menu navigation
This is primarily used by clothing companies who have many different side sections as well as their primary section. This gives a list of options within an option such as shoes or men's clothing. www.sportsdirect.com

Finally there is footer navigation whihc is on most webiste, this enables the user to navigate the website from a series of links at the bottom of the website, this can lead to external but related websites too. www.amazon.com

The Webreep Model is an information systems theory that explains and predicts website satisfaction, loyalty, and word-of-mouth. The model suggests that four factors (in the model called dimensions) directly influence website satisfaction. Website satisfaction, in turn, directly influences website visitor loyalty and likelihood of referral. Each factor is “shaped” by facets. The four dimensions and factors include:

Navigation (facets: Ease of Use, Ease of search)

Content (Information quality, information relevancy)

Performance (Page Load speed, visual appeal)

Trust (trustworthiness)

Card Layouts: You can use this design as each individual "card" is its own information container. Their rectangular shape makes them easy to rearrange.

Hero images: Since vision is the strongest human sense, HD hero images are one of the fastest ways to grab a user’s attention. Thanks to advances in bandwidth and data compression, users won’t suffer from slow load times either. One common layout you’ll find is a hero image above the scroll, followed by either zig-zagging sections or a cards-based arrangement.

Responsive Design:
Responsive web design has become incredibly popular in recent years thanks to the rise of mobile internet usage.

Tabs Navigation

Tabs navigation can be styled virtually any way you want, from realistic, textured tabs that look straight out of a notebook to glossy, rounded tabs and simple, squared-edge tabs. They’re seen on virtually every kind of site, and can be incorporated into almost any visual style.

Tabs have one distinct advantage over other types of navigation: they have a positive psychological effect on visitors. People associate tabs with navigation, because people are used to seeing tabs in notebooks or binders, and associate it with turning to a new section. This real-world metaphor makes tabs navigation intuitive.

Characteristics of tabs navigation are that they generally resemble and function like tabs in the real world. They can be horizontal or (less often) vertically.

The downside to tabs navigation is that they can take a lot longer to create and design in the website than other techniques, this is because they require more markup, images and CSS.
Another flaw is that they dont work well with a lot of links. so you should have 10 or less because it can look messy on the website.
