He was discharged twice in a four year span. The second time because of a strong argument for a raise in pay. He then wrote "The Case of the Officers of Excise". Paine visited London where he met Benjamin Franklin who assisted him in emigrating to america. He settled in Philadelphia and became a important person when he wrote common sense in 1976. Thomas joined the Continental army where although he was not a successful soldier he wrote "The American Crisis" witch helped to inspire the army. He decided to move back to England where he wrote "The Rights of Man" as his opinion on the French Revolution. He was outlawed in England for his anti-monarchist views. Paine took refuge in France and joined the National Convention. He was imprisoned for not endorsing the execution of Louis XVI. This is where he published his anti-church text  "The Age of Reason" before he was released and sent back to america where he died on June 8, 1809 at the age of 72 in New York City.
