As a child, I loved to be outdoors and find ways to help nature. Now, maybe not so much, but who am I to take away from another childhood? I got to live mine as creative and artistic as I wanted, so I will do nothing but encourage that for other children! That brings me to why I am blogging. The other day I read to my kids that I nanny, a fun, yet informational book. "Follow the Moon Home" by Phillipe Cousteau, was a great way to inspire kids to help out in their environment. The book was about helping baby sea turtles and how the class come up with ways to finds solutions to the problem. After reading the book, I talked about what my girls took away from the story. The oldest, in the first grade, wished she could help animals the way the kids in the book did. Of course her two younger sisters echoed her wanting to do the same thing. That's when I asked them what issues do they think of with animals they see around their house. The oldest quickly thought of the bird nest sitting up on the front yard tree. And well from there, I was sucked in to building a tree house for the birds to live. The book allowed my girls to problem-solve and think outside the box. If you want a read that helps kids want to make a difference, give this one a try!

I had three girls wanting to decorate and design a birdhouse, so I needed a lot of pink paint with large enough space for them to have their own side.

Dear Dr. Solomon, 
I must suggest a newer version of an older traditional tale to you. The best part is that it is still the same ol' tale, with a newer and child-friendly read along method. You will find "Helping your child to read" tips  before you begin the story, and the tips work well whether you are reading in groups or individually with children. To the left side of the page is where you will find most of the text you read aloud to or with children, and to the right of the pages is where you will find a fairly simple sentence that was said on the left side. This is for children to read back to you so that you are encouraging shared reading. It's a new and improved way to share old tales with new readers.

This book was such a pleasure to read! I love how Harriet is constantly speaking to God throughout the whole story. Having a narrator adds so much emphasis. My suggestion would be that it's best to read this book during Black History month, as it will shine a bright light on what went on in this country once upon a time. I also loved how there was a "foreward" before reading the book, and I would suggest reading that to students before you begin the story. Aside from Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, the excerpt explains what slavery is and what went on during the time period. This will allow students to better understand the circumstances of Harriet and just how truly brave she was. Not only was the story great, but the visuals, vibrant colors, and details shown all make amazing contributions to the book! 10/10 recommend!

Overall, I thought the book was cute all while being very informational. A little girl ready to go to school, has no idea what eventful morning she is about to have when hopping onto a talking bus. When she goes to sit on a seat that is saved for a very special someone, she wants to know who it is and why she has a seat saved for her. She learns where Mrs. Rosa Parks came from and all the important things about her background, all the contributions she made to the Civil Rights Movement, and other Civil Rights leaders along the way too. She realizes that these leaders are what helped make it possible to have the rights and freedom she has now. When she gets to school she is so excited to share all the information she has learned that morning. The reason I decided to read this traditional tale, was because I did not care for it as a child. I thought maybe being older, I would give it another try. In my opinion, I still am not crazy about it. It just seems repetitive and I do not like the ending. Goldilocks comes across the three bears house while they are out on a walk and tries out their porridge, chairs, and beds. The bears get back while Goldilocks is sleeping on a bed and does not know they are home, once she wakes, she is startled and runs out the house. That is pretty much the gist of the story. I think the illustrations are great, and it may be a good book for emphasizing size to children. Other than that, I do not think the plot of the story was well elaborated.

Not recommending this book necessarily for "educational" purposes, but I am recommending because of how cute and heart-warming it is. The book is based off the author's childhood and the people she grew up with. I would use the book as a way to show kids how to do things for others, and to give a great example of what it is like to be a great person and have good intentions. I think that it also shows great communication skills, because the kids confront the old man from the hat store even after being falsely accused of doing something. There is lots of love, care, and forgiveness in this story and the main one I took away was multicultural relationships. Even though gramma and the boys were a different religion than Patricia, she still went to church sometimes with them and still became family. What I loved most about this piece is that the story was true and an old memory Polacco shares with us. I must say I had some difficulty understanding the book. Even as a young adult, I had to discuss the meaning with a peer for better understanding. What is tricky about the book is that there is four stories/ pictures throughout the book, yet there is one story combined. To sum things up, there is a young boy taking a train home to his parents, they are on the way to the train station where people are waiting, but they make a sudden stop because of a herd of cows. Meanwhile there is a crook on the loose that is trying to blend in with those herd of cows. The children are playing with their parents and using newspaper for fun. In conclusion, my opinion was that you find out the train was a toy that the children were playing with, and the convict and cows were apart of their pretend playing. I would advise readers to read the book more than once for better understanding. When I first read the book, I read it as four separate stories, keeping in mind that it should make one big story. I chose this quote because of the depth and severity is resembled at the time of the story. The repetition of "the last night" had great significance in my opinion, and it is emphasizing that death is going to happen. Personally as a child, I learned so much from magic school bus books and movies. This book in particular is great for introducing biology to students. Miss Friz takes her kids on a school trip inside a classmate, Arnold’s, body and explores the different cells in our stomach, brain, and even nasal cavity. As informational as it is, I would advise/ explain to children that you cannot actually go inside of a human’s body on a school bus, but everything that the students are learning is true. Aside from the story, the pages have great illustrations and informative pieces on the sides that students have made after learning about the body. The Thanksgiving themed book is so simple, yet wonderful for young aged children! I would recommend read this book to children in prek-k or kindergarten who can relate to being small. The book is very helpful explaining that sometimes you are just too small to help with things or that grown-ups can be very busy sometimes but it does not mean we cannot have fun. Just like "Mini" the pilgrim found a friend, we can find things to do like play with toys or someone else who is not busy. I think the book is important for the young children to explain that they are not being forgotten about. Reading around Thanksgiving would also be fun. It is a short, but helpful, book that you can do neat activities for around the holiday. Check it out for young children!

First let me start off by saying that I can see why this book would be banned. Personally, I do like how detailed and in-depth the visuals are, but as a children's picture book, it may be a little too much. One night Max acts wild and beastly, his mother sends him to his room after being disrespectful before dinner. While in his room, Max ends up where the wild things are and they make him king. He soon gets lonely and follows a lovely sent back home, finding dinner in his room. The book level difficulty is not necessarily high, but again the illustrations can be pretty graphic, and in my opinion the visuals are not the same level as the reading. There has been talk that the book is "psychologically damaging" and "too dark."      Saying you read Dr. Seuss as a child will never tell your age! The other day I was helping my little two year old with counting. Later, we went to the book shelf to find a book to read and ironically enough, she picked this Dr. Seuss book that ties in really well with numbers! The cute rhymes with numbers really helped her with remembering what came next, and did I mention the amount of giggles we had? The child was just having a blast, I tell ya! Check back when she gets to stats and see how much she likes number then! 
      After reading the fun filled numbers book, I wanted to create an activity that would not only represent the book, but that we learned a better understanding of the number sequence up to ten. With the help of pinterest, I found some cute little Dr. Seuss activities to do specifically for that book. My girls have way too many wooden blocks than one needs (sorry trees), so I thought of a fun way to use them besides leaving them out everywhere for me to step on. I printed out some red apples that we cut out and taped to the blocks (double sided tape works great), then we stacked the blocks up high and went through counting the amounts of red apples that were stacked on top. 
*Side note: When you count up to four, it is a little more engaging for the kiddos to stack the apples on top of their head, like in the story. The higher you get, it obviously gets more difficult to do so, but you can stack them somewhere unusual like on a hard stable toy of some sort.

I find this quote to be significant to the book because Native tribe believed in the animals having an after-life spirit. The girl had a special connection with the horses and it is the only thing that could make her feel better.
