Assessments can be considered as a tool that helps teachers to understand where a student stands and how much he/she knows at that point. This tool is not to underestimate a child's ability to learn, but is only considered as a medium that helps teacher to meet the child where they are. 
I am familiar with Formative and Summative assessments. Diagnostic assessement is done at the start of a lesson/ unit and can be conducted using predesigned test examples. This assessment helps design the future lesson plans and understand the gaps in student learning/understanding.
Formative assessment can be conducted during a lesson in session, it can be initiated by a student question as well.
