My hometown is Beijing, China, but unfortunately, I couldn’t go back and visit this past summer. It’s still been a very eventful 4 months, though, despite the circumstances! For most of it, I’d lived with one of my best friends as my roommate near campus, which was a lot of fun, and in August, I moved back to White Rock, BC, where my family lives. Sadly, my schedule was mostly taken over by summer term courses, but I still got to spend plenty of time with friends and family, particularly outdoors a lot more compared to past summers. Attached below is a collage of a rundown, with some of my favourite views and of course, favourite eats. (I’m always looking for new restaurants to try, by the way; if you can give me some recommendations, that’d be lovely!)

My summer has been pretty uneventful, due to Covid but I did have a lot of fun. I spent most of my time talking with my family and redecorating my mom’s bedroom. I quite enjoy fine arts, such as baking, cooking, creative writing, and painting, so I painted a mural in her bedroom (I’m still working on it though, so it’s nowhere near done 😅).

I don’t think there is much that I could do to prepare for this class but I’ve been trying to speak as much Chinese and as little English as possible when interacting with my parents. So far, it’s working!

I go by Elaine (although my friends insist on calling me Eel). My Chinese name is 朱翠琳. I’m currently in my second year of university and am planning to major in English and minor in History. I was born in Guangdong, China, but I immigrated here when I was ~4. To be honest, I’m a disgrace to my family because of my horrible Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin) skills 😩 that’s why I’m taking this course—to regain my honour 😤. 

I didn’t do much during the summer because I was busy studying. Tip: don’t take 4 courses during the summer. I had around a week’s worth of rest after summer term 2 ended, during which I just lazed around and slept. I did take a day to go canoeing at Deer Lake, though. It was pretty fun; the gripping fear of capsizing only added to the thrill lol. 

I didn’t do much to prepare because I didn’t know what to expect since this is my first Chinese course. Does watching a few Chinese variety shows and listening to Chinese songs count? My favorite Chinese artists are 周深，华晨宇，蔡徐坤，王一博，李克勤，and a few others. Favorite variety show is Running man China.

I had initially planned a trip to LA with a couple of my friends for the summer but due to the covid situation we decided to cancel it. After the peak of quarantine, we ended up rescheduling the trip for one to Chiliwack instead. Our Airbnb was in the middle of no where and there wasn’t a real kitchen but we made the most of it and still ended up having a great time.

Other than that, I’ve been out hiking, and just enjoying nature and the outdoors in general. During quarantine I’ve been baking, working out, and watching tv shows a lot just like everyone else haha.
Honestly I haven’t been doing a lot to prepare myself for online learning cause I really didn’t know what to expect! But I’m slowly learning these days :) I’m really excited to improve my mandarin skills and meet you all!

I didn’t do much during the summer, mostly staying home watching K-dramas (shoutout to It’s okay not to be okay!!!). Other than that, I did take some days going out visiting nice cafes and restaurants. I really enjoy doing food photography and film photography!

This summer was definitely a weird one and a lot of my original plans were ruined, but I was fortunate enough to start a job as a dental assistant (somehow). Most of my time not spent at work was spent at home, so I tried to be as active as I could by exercising every day but that only worked on some days :)

Hello everyone! My name is Alger （家傑）and I was bored and raised in Vancouver with 廣州 roots. I am currently a 5th year visual arts varsity student. I compete on the UBC track team in the race walking event； people think it's a silly event but I wiggle my hips with pride :) This summer, I did some hiking, and made some art. I like to tell stories with my work and this recent work is called "Tu Er Shen - The Leveret Spirit". It's based on a Qing Dynasty folktale by Yuan Mei. It's a very inspiring story that shares a queer historical Chinese lens you may not know exists. In highschool I played many sports including rugby, hockey and football, but ever since I made the transition to university, it seems like I don't have much time at all to play apart of a team of any kind. During the past month I have mostly been going on motorcycle rides to Abbotsford and Squalish with a friend to pass time. Besides motorcycles, I'm also a huge car enthusiast.
