In the early 1700's, most cities, plantations, farms, and towns were located in the Coastal Range Region. The Piedmont , the land between the coastal plain and the Appalachian Mountains, was named such because it was beyond the area settled by the Europeans .From Pennsylvania large numbers of Scottish and Irish immigrants. This happened in the mid 1700's had begun moving into the backcountry of western Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina . They had to fallow an old Indian trail. Later on the trial was being used so much that it became wider and wider. Wide enough to make traveling easy because the immigrants can use their wagons and soon became known as the Great Wagon Road. From Pennsylvania the Great Wagon Road Passed through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and along the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. "[In places] it was so slippery the horses couldn't keep their footing but fell...to their knees" a traveler wrote. Though the Great Wagon Road was the only way to move to backcountry. When Daniel Boone was older he became a well known explorer who made new trails that took settlers even farther west.

Most people who lived in the backcountry lived simply. Most homes were made from logs and had dirt floors. They got light from the sunshine at day and from the fireplace at night. The children slept in the loft, a part of the house between the ceiling and the roof. To get to the loft you had to climb a ladder which was just wooden pegs in the wall. People on the frontier would have to get food and plant it. It was hard work. Frontier families had to make everything like candles, butter, soap etc. They had to protect themselves from animals or Indian attacks. They kept moving west to protect themselves. They moved into land claimed by France.
