Technology is fun, interesting, and ever changing. It can transform even the most boring lesson into one that is meaningful and challenging. As we have learned throughout this course motivation plays a huge role in English language acquisition and what better way to engage our students than with something that they are interested in. Teachers can use real-life connections to English through videos, such as news clips, music videos, and movie trailers. By providing a blended learning environment where teachers and students engage in online and face-to-face learning, instruction and student learning becomes enhanced by the use of a variety of digital resources.

Technology such as, interactive textbooks, audio recordings, and text-to-speech programs allow ELL students the opportunity to read texts and discover vocabulary that might be more advanced than their current reading levels. Furthermore, it enables students to work independently in the comfort of their own home.

Technology allows teachers to incorporate tools into their lessons that allow materials to be accessed on smartphones, laptops and tablets.  Web-based applications such as a Learning Management System (LMS) can “provide a platform for teachers to create, share, and instruct students.” (Effective Use of Technology Document)  ELL students can benefit from the accessibility of the course material, alerts, notifications and online communication tools as they can thinking about the material long after class is over. As stated in the article the current Ministry licensed LMS is called Desire 2 Learn, or D2L.

Multilingual books and audio tapes can be used to enhance reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. They are also a great tool for ELL students to share with their families if they all are developing language skills.

Multimedia projects offer ELL student’s hands-on, engaging ways to explore new curriculum content and concepts presented. For example, the “Jason Project” guides students through an experience-based science curriculum with video, live satellite broadcasts, and online activities including digital labs and electronic journals.

For ELL students needing additional vocabulary support, picture dictionaries are also available at web sites such as Enchanted Learning.
