FIS Advisory aims to create a safe space where members are included, strive for self-empowerment, develop relationship skills, and grow in responsible decision-making with a goal of impacting others.

I wonder if we actually need a separate advisory class in elementary school since most of us have morning meetings, circle time etc everyday of the week. I observe that children enjoy talking about their experiences as well as listen to the teacher share her/his experiences. I connect with other elementary teachers who seem to do advisory talks all through the day

I wonder if the students could have more deliberate opportunities to build these skills through section or school wide actions. Classroom decorating competitions, advisory run assemblies, lip sync competitions or other such team building activities. This may make the mission and goals feel more authentic.

In elementary school, we could schedule the morning and the end-of-day meetings in our daily schedule. Through having those meetings, we can establish relationships and also reflect on ourselves daily. It is also nice to have a separate Advisory time to go through a special topic/theme and develop social skills. It does not need to be by class. It can be as a whole elementary school activity so that students can interact vertically.

We feel it is a good mission which is in line with the philosophy of FIS (include, empower, impact). We are happy with it as it is.

The terms are clear. The first two terms are easier to incorporate into classroom practice, but impact is harder to have the students apply.

Advisory time is a good time to learn these skills and see how they improve a classroom environment and relationships. Those relationships are critical in building a safe space where students are more able and willing to share and make a more dynamic and productive environment.

What do we wonder? How much of our advisory mission statement do the PYP students know? How much do they need to know? Is it really effective?

I wonder what advisory looks like in the secondary. I observe that advisory happens frequently and continuously in elementary school.

Here's what we got...

- Classroom norms must be in collaboration with student input

- Having access to outdoor areas in close proximity to the school will provide fun and better learning engagements

- No prob with the existing mission statement - it's pretty straightforward

- Advisory time should be fun and engaging, not always lessons (incorporate mindfulness and games to promote unity as a batch)

The team is empowering the G12s to take charge of their advisory sessions' planning. Our aim is to shift our meetings away from being strictly instructional and create a space where students feel comfortable expressing their needs.

I wonder how we can run effective advisories when we have so many disruptions to the timeline/schedule. If we are looking to create meaningful experiences, how can we do this without consistency? - Kirk

What do you wonder? I wonder who the members are. Are they only teachers and students?
What do you observe? The school mission statement is used in wording.
What do you connect with? I connect with ‘creating a safe place’ which is the one of top priorities in school.

We wonder if we can reframe the mentor/advisory program differently for the EY & KG students. This happens all day, everyday in the class.

We observe the students all day. We observe and advise all day so how can we document this for the advisory program.
