I think I am on the road to be a language-aware teacher because I need enough time to know better how my students are, the reasons by which they want to learn English. Apart from that, I want to deepen in the details of teaching English, how students connect to this foreign language, the benefits to teach it since they are kids, the great opportunity to have a linguistic immersion not only for students but also for teachers who want to keep a high level of English...

Students who are more language aware, and who are more able to
use language appropriately, are more able to communicate effectively. In my opinion language awareness is, kind of, sensitivity to the students’ needs, and
ability to accommodate these needs in our teaching and planning.
If we don’t pay attention to their needs, they may be demotivated, and therefore lose interest in the subject.

I am trying to remind myself everytime in class which languages are present and what I could use for examples, comparisons, rituals etc. but I could still be better with that.

I think language awareness can be achieved only by working with different languages within our ordinary language lesson. Students need to hear what other languages sound like, and if they can hear it from ther fellow students it will be even more effective. This year I teach english in Italy in a class where there are Italian, Romenian, Japanese and Moroccan students. Only this morning every student introduced themselves to the class in their own language and the others were fascinated; somehow they (and me too) realized that beyond that language there is a different Country, a different culture, a different world. And how easy it is, even for me, a teacher, to take for granted that we all share the same experience of the same thing! I hope this course will teach me to be able to see the world with Japanese/Romenian/Moroccan eyes when I speak with a Japanese(Romenian/Moroccan student.

Language awareness is very important when teaching a non-native language, otherwise the teacher ends up talking to the walls. I teach EFL to Romanian students, and I try to pay attention to cultural differences, to linguistic clichés, to "false friends", etc. We have the rule "only English" in class, and even if sometimes it is challenging, we try hard to respect it. When being language-aware, one can anticipate possible ethnic linguistic mistakes (for example, English say 'I am 10 years old', but Romanians have the tendency to say 'I have 10 years', as this is the native collocation). When teaching to a multicultural group, things get more complicated. This year, I took Romanian classes for Asian migrants (especially Middle Easterners) and I must say it is quite an experience! I appeal to English as a common communication channel, but there are students who know only their native dialect. What can I say? We play a lot of mime and use lots of image cards! :)

Aware of this need, at the beginning of the year, we collect information from parents and students to provide a framework for understanding the language (portuguese). One of the aspects of linguistic awareness that I still need to develop is related to the attention we give to students whose mother tongue is different from the one in the country of schooling. Even students from Brazil (who speak portuguese) but who present differences such as pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar deserve a closer look. These often present difficulties in understanding and expressing them using the same language, both in the language commonly used in social interaction and in the informal communication happening on the playground.

In an educational framework if a teacher is unable to speak the same language as the students, nothing can be shared, meaning that thoughts, data …. cannot be assigned. Being conscious of the forms and functions of language is crucial; plus, we need to consider the five language domains (reading, writing, listening, speaking and comprehension) and integrate them in our teaching strategies. The understanding and confidence that we are using the “right” words (having in mind the learners’ lingo….) must always be pondered.

My own multilingual experince has helped me to understand and support my students. I agree with the speakers who have mentioned that cultural background is crucial for languages. Language diversity is a part of our contemporary world. Choosing books for my high school students I want to see and "read" the world with them. We read the same text in English, but our perceptions are so diverse which leads to "cultural exchange" as I call it. I also love asking my students to compare a translation of the text with the original (for example, if a student is from Germany, it's so easy for him/her to read F.Kafka's works in German and introduce "lapses" in the translation, etc :) English is the language of education at our High school and students have to use it to prove their points of view. When they live the class or if we go to the theatre or cafe, we could use different languages to communicate and students are so happy to translate words using their mother tongue to teach groupmates to pronounce something or even sing a song.

As an English language teacher, I feel that I have language awareness because English is taught as a foreign language in my country and the structure of our mother tongue is totally different from English. On the other hand, vocabulary acqusition process may be a bit difficult for my students beacuse we use one word in different contexts with different meanings. So, someone must read or have background knowledge to understand the meaning of the word used in the context. That's why I must pay attention to L1 acqusition process, knowledge ans skills of my students. Moreover, we have some immigrant students whose first languages are different. As a teacher, I am trying to discover the structure and usage points of their L1 when they make errors. I have to be compotent in language awareness, if I am not, it will be difficult for me to detect the strengths and weaknesses of my students. Therefore, I provide info. about the outcomes of my lesson and engage my students with interactive activities, tasks, projects in order to get accustomed them to L2. It is really important for students to see the structure and vocabulary items in communicative places. Also, while completing these tasks, they need to have a goal to interact, and to be able to interact, they need to develop their language skills. All in all, developing language skills depends on language awareness.

As a child I used to play and communicate with children with different nationalities from me. As a student and an athlete I had the opportunity to travel and listen different people speaking different language. As a mother, I encourage my childred to explore and learn as many languages as they can. Everyday schools are becoming more diverse in culture and nationalities, due to planned or forsed migrations etc., therefore I feel the need to keep up to perform better.

I am aware of 8 key competencies, two of which are relevant to the language: native (mother tongue) and foreign. I am aware that migrations are becoming more frequent and with them languages also. I am aware that small languages will disappear if we allow it.

When we get a student from another speaking area to our school or my class, I ask myself: How well do I know that language? How to make it easier for these students to learn our language in an easy way? I look for answers to all these questions and embark on an adventure.

I definitely feel like a language-aware teacher. I think all the teachers of today should be ''language-aware'' teachers because it is not enough any more for a child/person to speak only one language, i.e. the mother tongue.
Times are changing rapidly and people are digitally connected more than ever. International communication is common in the majority of businesses. So we can say that the English language is another language that a person should definitely learn and speak.
Also, maybe some of our pupils have parents who come from another country and speak another language, too. So it is important that we as teachers nurture that fact and give that pupil a possibility to use another language in the classroom and teach us and the other pupils something new.
Besides their mother tongue, many pupils speak at regional dialects and we should pay attention to that fact, too.
We as teachers shoul definitely nurture language diversity in our classess and use it to broaden the horizons of both - us as teachers and our pupils, too.

I think I can be considered a language aware teacher, as I was raised in the basque country, a region in Spain where both spanish and basque languages are spoken. I have therefore seen teachers and students with different mother tongues interact one with each other, instinctively trying to make themselves understand by the other part.

Nowadays I work as a teacher in another region of Spain, where no second language is spoken. All my students have spanish as their single mother tongue, and we usually do not have a significant number of migrants in our schools. Last year however I had 2 turkish and 1 asian students in the same level who came in the middle of the term, and suddenly I needed to become language aware in a very short gap of time. I remembered my past experience with languages and managed to communicate with them in an improving way (I would like to think I succeeded in teaching them Physics, but they should be the ones judging my job).

I think we may start welcoming more migrant students in the coming years, and that is why I would like to become more language aware.

I consider myself quite language aware. I've had to deal with many different students in different contexts. Foreign students usually enter ordinary High School groups when they can understand and speak Spanish. They have previously received personal attention to learn the language. In my experience, I had some students from Eastern Europe and South -America , and they were well integrated with the others. Children are usually really receptive and learn fast. I've also worked as a private tutor. Teaching spanish to a Japanese woman was a really challenging experience. She could speak Japanese and a bit of English. All resources are helpful. Pictures, gestures, Online dictionaries, Spanish texbook recommended for Japanese people, cultural comments (Manga, festivals, etc) It was really hard work, especially for her, , since Japanese is so different. Teaching Spanish to a German young man was much easier, but I often used English or German words when the explanations in Spanish weren't clear enough. I always advise students to learn languages. The more you learn, the best you'll be able to communicate and understand other people from other cultures.

I consider language awareness lets teachers and students learn the gist of language. A teacher must bear in mind that students coming from diverse backgrounds and countries can learn effectively, understand the cultural differences between their mother tongue and the target language(English) and better promote the use of language.
Being a language-aware teacher means understanding the grammar rules of a language and knowing how they are used. Three prominent elements to take into account are: form, meaning and pronunciation.
In my own experience I have taught many students coming from Morocco who didn´t have a good command of Spanish nor English, so they were given extra support in both languages to overcome their weaknesses and become integrated in the class group.

After being introduced to the notion of the concept being taught on the MOOC, I would consider myself a partially language-aware individual. As a prospective educator, it is important to know when and how to incorporate non-primary languages while helping English-language learners learn the English language and their maternal language simultaneously. The same mentality can also apply in places where English is not the primary language in a particular country, but is used in the classroom. The main area in need for improvement would be to catch up on the linguistic diversity of the world's least spoken languages, where cultures that are not prominent in most western education systems create new challenges that need time to learn.

—Austin Nicholas Dragos [United States of America]

As Confucius said "Whenever three people walk together, there must always be one of them who can become my teacher" (i.e. we can always learn something from everyone) Language-awareness can also help the teacher to understand language-related mistakes from the students, to avoid misjudgment, and to custom proper evaluations that might be able to limit language bias phenomenon.

I believe that I am a language-aware teacher at a certain point since I trust that I still have so many things to learn about this area.
I do think that to have this awareness is an asset for us to understand our students better, especially those who don't share our native tongue. It is also know that the more languages you have under your belt, the more knowleadgeable of the world you might be as you are surrounded by diversity and your capacity to problem-solving is higher. A teacher that can benefit from diversity in a classroom is a richer teacher as he has different perspectives in relation to life, customs and behaviours. When facing diversity and difference students develop their skills much faster than the others who only see one side of the coin, that is, when pupils have colleagues of different origins they come to the conclusion that translation can never be made literally as there are phrase peculiar to each country and that's why they can broaden their horizons.
I find it difficult to define what I still need to develop my skills in this area since I think it will be a lifelong process. To share ideas, to see other viewpoints may help me enlarge my knowledge in relation to this.

From my point of view, language is enrichment, it is diversity. It means meta knowledge. For this reason, I think that I am quite fortunate to have the classes in which the predominant aspect is the variety. I have many students from different countries, and at first it seems to be scary, as not only do they not understand very well English, nor the Spanish. But at some point, it is quite interesting to share languages and see how they differently and similarly work. Even in terms of culture. Therefore, I consider myself to be midway on becoming a proficiency language aware teacher.

I am a big promoter of language awareness for many quick reasons:
-growing up with another language at home and at school made me aware of the assumptions that come when someone has not enough awareness about languages or in even more general terms about how people may communicate differently
-as an advocate for first language preservation and for accommodating English language learners in schools and classrooms, it became obvious to me that although many efforts for inclusion had increased cultural awareness that teachers still lacked language awareness to understand learners better (even if we do not speak all the languages that are present, we should at least try to understand about them)
-being multilingual people may assume that you are the best person to communicate with someone in another language even if it is one you do not speak and partly they may be correct because you are more flexible in trying to find paths to communication
-working with teachers of International Languages here in Ontario we do activities for EDL to promote the importance of ALL languages and to reflect on our process for learning and dispel any myths that may exist related to language learning
-although we are pretty aware in this group, there is always more for us to be informed about (ongoing)

Simply put, language awareness means understanding the grammar rules of a language and knowing how they are used. But being a language aware teacher also involves encouraging understanding between cultures, improving students' cognitive ability and preparing them for life beyond school.
For all students (whether they are learning through their first language or an additional language) language is a vehicle for learning. It is through language that learners access the content of the lesson and communicate their ideas. So, as a teacher, I think it is my responsibility to make sure that language isn’t a barrier to learning.

One way to achieve this is to become more ‘language aware’.
Language is more than a tool. I am a teacher at a vocational school where more than 50% of our students have a migration background. Of course, many of them speak German quite well. But all the same many of them are not ablento express their feelings in this language, which is still a foreign language and does not offer the possibility to share their feelings. So the foreign language is somehow a formal tool to take part in my lessons. Their cultural identity is expressed in their mother tongue. So sometimes, I feel seperated...

Being a speaker of several languages myself and a great believer in the natural capacity of all human beings to learn and communicate across languages, I have always taught my subjects (English and German as Foreign Languages) exploiting the positive interference between them and across the languages that my students were familiar with. In my classes I encourage all learners to switch codes and peer-teach their native languages. I always try to make my students aware of the universal grammar and urge students to discover its different manifestations. We use mediation activities, sing same-subject songs across languages and create CLIL glossaries. I am eager to boost my language awareness by adding more languages to my quiver, like Farsi and Arabic. Thankfully, my students from refugee backgrounds are willing to help out!

So this means we can transfer our gained skills and make use of them in order to learn a new foreign language. Trying to understand what mistakes students make dependin on their mother tongue really helps the teacher in the classroom.
