Ben Quilty's Captian S in Afghanistan

I like this artwork because it somewhat resembles my aim of creating a human form of a person with the fear of not being recognized, as the wire is distorted in ways to show body perspective and the emotions of being frivolous and sad comes off immediately when looking at this abnormal body form. I like that the artist has used an extensive amount of types of wire, as the use of iron wire differs in gauge, I like that the difference in thickness shows a difference in the interconnectivity of the body. In my artwork, I’ll take inspiration from the artist's use of different gauge wires to differ the internal and external body on the body perspective. This can be interpreted as the fear of not being recognized as the outer casing of the body can be the thinner wire to represent having more to show and the inner workings of the body can be made from a mix of lower gauge wire to represent the bottled up emotions, talents, and personality. 

Fruit installation vessel 

This art piece shows a great example of how I want my sculpture to appear when hanging from the ceiling. These installations are quite droopy and messy. this creates an imperfect or possibly uncomfortable vibe to the viewer. I want my piece to represent a weight pulling the sculpture down. In this piece majority of the installation is hanging at the bottom creating a heavy perception.

The Drop 

This sculpture shows the colors and possible shapes I would like my sculpture to hold. This sculpture does not hang from the ceiling as I had intended but rather sits on the ground balancing. This piece uses dark blues, in my piece I would like to create an ombre of these blues to create a darker shade near the bottom of the piece. In this artwork I believe that it is entirely the same shade of blue, however, the shadowing in this picture gives a good example of the ombre I would like to enforce on my sculpture. Additionally, the shape resembles a drop of water. This object is a large inspiration for my piece as it shows weight at the bottom, pulling it down.

The Planet of Yolo

This sculpture is a great example of how weight will tie into my sculpture. This piece is created with the heavy material of copper and placed on a base, in this photo the base holds the weight of the sculpture, however, in my piece I would like to show the base unable to hold the weight. In other words, crumbling from the weight of the heavy object. Another inspiration I took from this piece was the use of a heavy medium for my piece. I may spray paint it copper or add metal elements

From this artwork, I like how it used a strange technique to make the plaster look somewhat ancient and mummified, which I'd like to incorporate into my artwork as it displays a sense of unevenness and hauntedness. I would also comment on how the artist used a mixture of mediums, just like how I aim to do, I would be inspired to use the browned technique and incorporate the wire instead of the resin to empower the feeling of emptiness. In my experiments, I would plan to work on finding a technique that complements how this artist makes the plaster look so old and run out to support my overall sculpture structure. Even so, this artwork by Pauline Couble is important in my learning process as she allows me to enhance my learning on mixing different mediums to look cohesive, I intend to take inspiration from the grainy and muttered look of the plaster and how it conformed to look cohesive with resin(On my artwork I would replace resin with foam)

I like the harsh and rough charcoal strokes that appear to carry emotional weight, and absolutely adore how the abstract lines overlay each other to form a coherent image of a face. I plan to incorporate this artistic style into my own artwork because it can greatly convey the sense of eeriness and unease that I am aiming for. Furthermore, I would also like to use this style as a form of therapy to create my own strokes that carry my emotional weight from my fear.

This artwork captures the feeling of eeriness that I would like to portray in my painting. It inspires me to incorporate disturbing imagery into my art as a form of therapy and expression to present shocking experiences as a consequence of my fear. The unnerving feeling that one may feel is likely from the figure that seems to resemble a human, but not quite realistic enough to promote feelings of uneasiness; this is otherwise known as the uncanny valley.

 I was able to find inspiration in Antony Gormley's "Exposure Maquette" to explore the theme of fear of purposelessness in my own sculpture. The use of nickel-plated nylon in Gormley's sculpture creates a sense of solidity and weight that I find intriguing, and I plan to use a similar material in my own work to experiment with texture and surface.

I also plan to use the human form as a basis for my sculpture, like Gormley did. However, I will explore distortion, fragmentation, or abstraction to convey a sense of unease and uncertainty. I am also drawn to the use of negative space in Gormley's sculpture to create a sense of emptiness or purposelessness. I will experiment with negative space to create a similar effect in my own sculpture. Additionally, I will play with scale to create a sense of disorientation or overwhelm in the viewer, as Gormley's small sculpture evokes intimacy and vulnerability. I will also experiment with light and reflection to create a sense of mystery or uncertainty, as Gormley's reflective sculpture interacts with its surroundings. Ultimately, my goal is to create a sculpture that evokes a sense of fear and unease in the viewer, while also challenging their perceptions of purpose and meaning. I plan to use Gormley's sculpture as a starting point, but I am excited to bring my own unique perspective and voice to the work in order to be able t depcit the fear of purposelessness through a wire sculpture figure of a man without eyes and a hole in the chest whilst holding a broken compass to syymbolise how he has no sense of direction in life and he is purposeless and that he fears this sense of direction will burden him internally.

 I've been inspired by Edvard Munch's "The Scream" and its exploration of the theme of purposelessness. The composition of the painting, with its twisted and contorted figure in the foreground and chaotic landscape in the background, is particularly effective in conveying a sense of disorientation and anxiety. I've been experimenting with similar techniques in my own artwork, using distortion, fragmentation, and abstraction to create a sense of unease and uncertainty.

The use of vivid and contrasting colors in "The Scream" has also caught my attention, and I've been playing with color in my own artwork to evoke a sense of emotion or mood. By using bold and contrasting hues, I hope to create a similar sense of tension and unease that Munch achieved in his painting.

Finally, I've been thinking about how I can use symbolism in my artwork to convey a sense of purposelessness or existential angst. "The Scream" is rich with symbolic meaning, and I'm exploring ways to incorporate my own personal symbols and imagery into my art to represent my own struggles and experiences. Through experimentation with composition, color, and symbolism, I hope to create my own unique and impactful artwork that captures the theme of purposelessness in a meaningful way.

In addition to the emotional impact and composition of the sculpture, I have been inspired by the rich symbolic meaning of "The Thinker." The focus on the head and the power of the mind, as well as the muscularity of the figure, all convey important symbolic elements related to the human struggle with purposelessness and the search for meaning. I plan to incorporate similar symbolic elements into my own sculpture, using imagery and symbolism to create a powerful and meaningful artwork.

Overall, "The Thinker" has been a powerful and inspiring artwork for me as I seek to explore the theme of purposelessness in my own sculpture. By drawing upon the emotional impact, composition, and symbolism of Rodin's work. What I will take away from his work in terms of how I will apply it into my own is the excellent form, stability and simplicity of this piece and how it was able to convey lots of meaning by reducing the variety of components incorporated and by focusing more on detail and refinement to make it more visually stunning.

The planks that will hold the hanging drops are in the shape of a cross. This cross is representative of a mobile that hangs above a baby's crib. The mobile symbolises my reference to childhood and the feeling of growing up too fast. The drops will be hanging from these planks similar to the objects that hang from traditional crib mobiles. The drops will be hanging from this structure to identify that the feeling I am expressing comes from the feeling of growing up too fast. 

The drops will be constructed with plaster to represent the weight of the drop. The base will be made from styrofoam and then covered with the plaster so that it becomes a solid. The more solidified my drops look, the heavier the weight will appear. This is significant to the “drop in the gut feeling” that I am intending to express. With plaster the drops are hanging with a strong weight that pulls them down and shows how they are dropping. 

The drops will be hanging from the piece because they are supposed to appear as if they are falling or dropping from above. When someone looks at my piece I want them to think that the drops have fallen and express the feeling of barely hanging on by the string. 

The drops will all hold a similar shape where they are quite thin at the top and fall into a full and round sphere like shape. To simplify, each piece will hold a shape that resembles a typical water drop. This drop shape signifies the “drop” aspect in the “drop in the gut feeling”. When I visualise this feeling as a shape I see a drop similar to that of a raindrops falling. However, some drops are mutated and messy while others remain simple and intact. 

The shape of the drops will differ and each be individually constructed. Some will be simple and clean while others are complex and messy. This differentiation in the shapes and construction of each drop symbolises the different emotions or significance that occur in each moment or memory of one's life. 

In some drops there will be a hole going through the middle to make it appear hollow. This hole symbolises life being able to pass by. In this case the drop becomes hollow and anything has the ability of passing through it. This is significant to the topic of growing up too fast and missing out on experiences. When missing out on experiences they seem to fall past you, or in this case through the hole. Once they have passed through you cannot get them back. 

The colour tones in this piece are symbolic to my own personal feelings and emotions towards the message. When I visualise how I feel when imagining my fear, the colour tones are mixes of dark blues and purples. Using these deep colour tones gives a solemn and depressing vibe, therefore the viewer will understand that these drops bring negative emotions. The blues will be painted in an ombre where the tone becomes darker near the bottom of the drop. The colour darkening as it progresses down the drop is symbolic of the weight the drop holds and how the bottom is holding these negative emotions causing it to drop. 

In each of my drops I will use a mix or a few of three different plaster techniques that I identified from my experimentation. The plaster techniques include smooth, bumpy, and a technique in which I place the plaster strips without smoothing it out (so that the texture is full of small holes). Using a variety of different techniques on each drop makes them unique. The clash of texture and shape is intended to give a vibe of anxiety towards the viewer. This feeling of stress and discomfort from the messiness of each drop is symbolic to the realisation and following panic of growing up quickly. 

An expression that contrasts with the rest of my piece will be wavy lines of bright orange on one drop hanging in the centre of the drops. This contrasting expression represents moments of peace and the overcoming of this fear. I wanted to include this element in my piece to represent how it can be used as a means of therapy. Through expressing that it is possible to find peace past this fear, I am sending a message both to myself and the viewers.

My final piece that I will produce will consist of a foam block with various geometric shapes and curvy and scattered lines all over the block. There is a carved eye in the middle of the block with embedded eyes all over the main eye. There are wires attached to the left and right sides of the foam block that connect to a black base thus making the foam block stay afloat.

The purpose of this piece is to represent the feeling of being purposeless. The geometric shapes and curvy lines represent the chaos and confusion that can come with feeling lost and without direction. The carved eye represents the feeling of being directionless and not knowing what to do. The wires represent the feeling of being trapped or stuck. The black base represents the feeling of emptiness and nothingness as well as the interal void that comes with having a lack of purpose and the lack on mental clarity that comes along with it.

I chose to use foam because it is a lightweight and easy-to-shape material that can be used to create a variety of geometric shapes. I chose to use wire because it is a strong and flexible material that can be used to create a sense of movement and tension. I chose to use paint to add color and texture to the piece. I chose to use glue to attach the various elements of the piece together.

I believe that this is the best solution to my idea because it is a creative and expressive way to represent the feeling of being purposeless. The use of different materials and techniques allows me to create a piece that is visually appealing and thought-provoking. I believe that this piece will be successful in communicating my artistic intention to my target audience.

overlapping wire and aluminum (realistic parts: face, hand, and foot): The realistic part of the body represents what physically and truthfully happens and what I have to deal with from inside and outside. For instance, I tend to feel my hands, feet, and head as the most trembling parts, which leads me to freeze and overthink about it. And an overlapping line will completely show the department's feelings and anxiety.

Paper mache and plaster:  (bumpy texture): 

This sculpture will be made mainly using mordrop, thin wire, thicker wire, chicken wire, and chopsticks. Once the mordrop is dry I will then use paint to paint over the entire sculpture and sometimes bruising the chopsticks so that it is bruised.

In this outfit, we can see how the flower pops up at the top of the head area. This is also what I wanted to do with my hair because it shows how there’s nothing from the bottom till when it’s fully opened up at the top with all the flowers and colors. This was it oh my inspiration because I wanted to show how much I’ve grown from the experiences that I’ve had, and where I am now, so I wanted to fly to represent where I am at this stage in life. 

This really inspired me to try make some of my flowers look the same as this because it has a very weird texture that I want it on onto my hat and I really liked how the designer made it very messy because it shows all the different type type of designs and techniques in the flowers and the different types of folds.

This design really influenced me to try to create something similar because I’ve really liked how the designer used a lot of small pieces of paper to create a look where it looks like flowers, but also messy at the same time, and I really wanted to make this with my final piece because it looks very unique and different
