At the start of the novel, we learn that Conor is extremely mature for his age. He feels a responsibility to care for his mother even though it should be the other way around. Although this seems like a good quality to have, it's preventing him from living his life as any other 13-year-old should. This especially worries his grandmother who mentions this multiple times throughout the book. However, Conor does not seem to mind because he is drowning in his own guilt. Alongside his guilt, he is also drowning in his denial. Conor refuses to believe that his mother is going to die soon, which ultimately ends up harming his mental health even further. As the book goes on, we see many people starting to try and break the truth to Conor; that his mother was going to die one way or the other. As the monster's visits start to get more intense, Conor starts to prepare himself even more for telling the truth until finally, he does. Without meaning to, Conor feels relieved when he admits what he was so guilty to feel: that he wanted everything to end. That he wanted things to get over with. That he couldn't wait for when the pain happened so he could move on.
