Rina Cohen Schwartz's Grandfather's patch

Can anyone identify this patch that belonged to my Grandfather, Rabbi Pinchas Cohen???

To give a little context, my grandfather was born in Jerusalem in 1903. He was a rabbi, mohel, shochet, and teacher.

My cousin has this patch and his teaching certificate signed by Rav Avraham Yitzchak Kook, chief rabbi for Palestine, dated Feb 2, 1922.

Our grandfather moved to the United States in 1925. His passport identifies him as a Palestinian.

Our life tapestries are connected to those that came before us. My grandmother made me this vest. My Savta Etka, grew up in Poland as a very active member of Beitar. After the war she was determined to get to Israel. My mother and uncle spent years of their childhood in Holon. The family relocated to the USA for medical reasons but that connection to a future in Israel was woven into my spirit. My grandmother’s stitches carry the challenges of her life. The flowers represent her hope for my future. I see this tapestry from both sides but through my own interpretation and through the lens of my own story. The flowers on this vest are the same, “an everlasting vision,” as they were when I was a child but I have, “an ever-changing view” as every experience in my life and every bit I learn about her adds meaning to her creation. I can never completely “hold” my grandmother’s story or my own as it sometimes too heavy and complex.

In my parents house in Jerusalem hangs an artwork, woven is a picture of a few African women cooking. The artwork is called: "The watched pot". My mother recieved this artwork from her grandmother. To me it is a reminder of the South African roots that I have and of a world that is distant from mine yet a part of my history and something I am proud of.

So many wonderful opinions of what the patch could mean/represent. I still don't have absolute confirmation, but I love that there were so many ways to connect to Eretz Yisrael through my grandfather's artifact.

Also, having this physical connection to my own Israeli roots, is very meaningful to me at this time.

מפת השולחן הרקומה שלנו מלווה אותנו שנים רבות. קיבלנו אותה כשהיינו זוג צעיר בקיבוץ רמת רחל. אין לנו מושג מי רקם אותה אבל יש עליה מדבקות ממכבסת הקיבוץ. המפה מלווה אותנו בכל הבתים שגרנו בהם בארץ וכמובן שבחרנו להביא אותה אתנו לוילנה... חלק מהזכרונות שלנו בישראל שמלווה אותנו כאן. המפה מיוחדת, אין כזאת לאף אחד. ברור שהיא נרקמה בהשקעה רבה ונמשכה זמן רב. אנחנו אוהבים את העובדה שאיננו יודעים מי הכין אותה כי זה משאיר מקום רב לדימיון....

I wish I could complete my mother's last work. Instead, I take it out from time to time to contemplate and share stories or memories about my mother. She wasn't much of an artist but she found comfort in creating tapestries. the photo shows the home of my childhood in the Arava ages ago...

כיסוי לחלות שסבתא שלי ז"ל רקמה לי. היא היתה מוכשרת בעבודות יד ורקמה לנו כיסוי לחלות וכיסוי לצלחת פסח. המעניין הוא שהיא בחרה דווקא להשאיר לנו אלמנטים מתוך העולם היהודי. משולחן החג והשבת לדעתי היא ידעה שזה מה שמאחד ומחבר בין הדורות השונים. וכך היא איתנו כל שבת.

יש לי שעון יד יפהפה שעבר לי דרך אמא שלי.

את השעון קיבלתי בבר המצווה.

הוא לא עבד אבל מבחינתי הוא תכשיט ולכן במועדים מיוחדים אני משתמש בו.

זה מזכיר לי את סבי ז"ל ואת המורשת ההונגרית שעברה דרכו ובנוסף את אימי שנפטרה לפני 4 שנים.

כיסוי לתפילין שסבתא שלי הכינה לסבא שלי ועבר לאחר מכן לאבא שלי שהעביר אלי ואני זכיתי להעביר אותו לפני מספר חודשים לבן שלי שחגג בר מצווה.

כמובן שזה מלווה אותנו כל החיים ומחבר אותנו לעם ישראל ולמשפחה שלנו

סבתא רחל הייתה אלופה בתפירה וריקמה , היא סרגה , ורקמה מפות , שמלות כלה ובגדים. הגם שבימיה הראשונים של תל אביב , היתה חוויה מגדרית שהבעל מפרנס בחוץ והאישה בבית , סבתא רחל , כך תמיד אמר סבא הייתה הבוס בבית , והריקמה שלה היא זו הכניסה הבייתה כסף , לא פחות מחנות הנעלים של סבא בפלורנטין. ונשים עמדו אצלה בתור שתרקום להם . המפה התגלגלה והיום מקשטת את פינת האוכל בביתי , ותמיד מזכירה שסבתא הייתה אישה חזקה שפרצה כל גדר ותקרה בעזרת כישרונה וליבה

בבית במרתפו הוחבאה אימי בימי השואה באנו לביקור שורשים, עשרות שנים אחכ, עם נכדים. תושביו המקוריים של הבית כבר לא שם, אבל בבית האוקראיני רקמות רבות, מסורתיות, צלבים צלבים של חוט. את חוויות הזמן ההוא אמא הביעה בעבודות האמנות שלה.

My grandfather came from Lithuania to Argentina almost by mistake in a boat in 1918-20, I'm not sure. He opened the first meat kosher store outside of Buenos Aires. He was a quiet man who inspired my love for Judaism and my desire to grow as a Jew. He could never visit Israel but encouraged me to study there. I think a lot of what i feel and felt through my life was an outcome, a projection and a result of his love and also frustration.

סבא שלי, הקים את בית הכנסת בבית החולים סורוקה. בכל שבת הוא עבר בכל המחלקות ועשה קידוש לכל המטופלים.

לאחר מותו, זכיתי לקבל את כוס הקידוש שלו.

כיום, אני ומשפחתי, מתגוררים בתוך הכפר השיקומי עדי נגב, וזוכים לערוך קידוש לכל המטופלים בכל שבת. את החסד והדרך שספגנו מסבא, אנחנו משתדלים להמשיך.

This Challah cover was given to me by my mother as a gift when my husband and I moved in together. It has been passed down through 3 generations in my family, with my grandmother receiving it from her neighbor, Mrs. Baumgarten, in Munster, Germany. Despite not being Jewish, Mrs. Baumgarten created this because she held my grandmother in high regard and treated her like family. My grandparents moved to Germany after the war, having previously resided in Poland.
