Consent is receiving the patients agreement that they are happy for us as osteopaths to undergo a specific treatment, it is important that we continue to communicate with the patient throughout the whole duration of the session and continue to gain consent if we move onto different techniques. Patients can be very trusting in us so we should not jeopardise that trust in any way and make them feel vulnerable. When seeking for consent it is important to not miss out any details of the treatment so the patient can give an honest answer and therefore prevent any misunderstanding.

At this stage I the course this only applies to my note taking. This is a skill I need to work on as I have found I am rather slow. I need to start using the SOCRATIVES and abbreviations to shorten the time it takes me. Furthermore, I just had my first clinical integration exam and I found the treatment part rather challenging and again I need to work on coming up with a treatment quicker, this will involve me knowing all techniques and treatments we have been shown very well.

Upon receiving my exam result I was extremely nervous as I had a feeling I would have failed but was still hopeful I did enough to at least get a pass, opening that result and seeing that I had failed was extremely hard, I felt disappointed and upset with myself. It defiantly was difficult to look past the fail and this resulted in me loosing motivation and confidence in myself which impacted on my studies greatly. However, it didn't take long before I turned this into a positive and started to work harder, slowly started to build my confidence up, this not only improved my mental well being but I also saw a big improvement in my grades. I was finally satisfied with my work and was able to finish the year with very good results. I am going to be retaking this exam but I now have the confidence in myself that I will be able to pass with my new positive attitude towards my studies.

We did an exercise to try and feel what's under our hands, I found myself struggling with this and wasn't sure if I was feeling what I needed to do. the lecturer came over to help and just by placing her hand on my patients ankle she was able to tell that she had a trauma in that ankle. I never knew how important touch really is and the idea of "listening with your touch"

Clinic experience

Going to my first clinic observation at the ESO clinic I had no idea what to expect but I was soon overwhelmed by the whole experience. From the clinic group discussions with the tutor to overseeing a session, all of it was incredible to see and be a part of.
During the discussion with the lecturer, the 3rd and 4th years were all gathering their ideas on different treatment methods once they have listened to the case history of the patient. I found listening to other peoples opinions extremely helpful to get a better understand of the situation or to be presented with an idea I hadn't thought of. It was amazing to see all the knowledge they had and the different ideas they all presented, their areas bounded off each other and everyone was adding on extra information that could be of use to the practitioner. This again showed me that knowledge is so vital and without it we could risk making the wrong decision on the choice of treatment and it became another reason why I needed to push myself to get the higher grades in exams.

Going in to observe a session the practitioner talked me through the patients case history and really involved me in the session. At the end he asked if I had any questions about his choice of treatment or if anything didn't make sense. Seeing the way he handled the patient was vital, he continuously made sure the patient was comfortable and continued to gain consent throughout, which is something that has been highlighted in every lecture I've had this year. So to see it being used in real life scenarios definitely highlighted its importance.
Furthermore, seeing the amount of detail he went into when presenting the diagnoses showed me the level I have been working at is very low and I will now begin to develop on that in my lectures so I am more prepared for when I go into clinic come 3rd year.

Work load

Starting university straight after secondary school was incredibly difficult, I knew the step from secondary school to university will be big but I definitely underestimated just how difficult it will be. The work load was incredibly high and as I have never experienced something to this extent I was unaware as to how to deal with it. I struggled with the online lecturers as there was very little opportunity for questions to be asked and I also felt uncomfortable voicing my struggles where all of my year 1 colleagues could see and I therefore did nothing in regards to seeking that extra help. I found with the online lectures that people used the chat/question area for irrelevant conversations about their daily activities which took my focus away from the lecture and I was no longer taking any of the content in. This was a huge hurdle for me to overcome as I felt I was unable to express this feeling with my anatomy lecturer so in response I did nothing about it and tried my best to stay motivated and continue watching the lectures. This soon became apparent that I had to come forward and voice my concerns as this was beginning to affect my studies and I wasn't gaining anything from such important lectures.

Later in the year we received an email from this lecturer about any feedback we have to give him on the online lectures so I saw this as my opportunity to speak about my concerns. I believe he received a high volume of complaints on this matter as the next lecture we had people were reminded about the chat zone to only be used for relevant questions about the topic we are studying. In response to this people stopped having conversations on the chat zone and the lectures become more engaging and I could see the improvement in my learning.
