The year is 1984 and the book starts out with Winston entering his apartment building and walking up to his floor. He is a minor member of the Party in Oceania. Winston doesn't remember much of his past or even the past in general. However, Winston likes to think and one day buys a journal so he can write his thoughts down. It is illegal to think against the Party and to write your ideas down on a book. This how Winston begins to rebel and later on he finds a girl that helps him rebel. They are turning their backs against the Party and decide to join the Brotherhood which eventually leads to their capture and punishment.

You should read this book because it has many twists and turn that make you think twice about everything. One moment you think you can talk to anyone and then the next you're house is being rushed by SWAT. This books takes you to 1984 and makes you feel like you're a part of this dystopian novel. This really makes you think about what will happen in the future. You begin to question yourself if things like global warming or nuclear wars will dramatically affect the future of our world.

What does this book teach us?

We can learn many things from 1984. One thing I learned is to never completely trust your government. 1984 showed us that whatever your government says is true, may not be true at all. The Party said that Big Brother is always watching, but he doesn't even exist. This also teaches us the danger that totalitarianism can pose to society if it is ever successful. This book shows us the many cons that totalitarianism can bring to any society.

What I liked and hated about this book.

I love dystopian and utopian type novels. These books tend to make me feel a little nervous for the future. Reading about the future can be fun, but once you're in this future I find it to be somewhat scary. I like learning about possible outcomes for the future. The only thing I didn't like was the ending of the book. It was kind of a simple ending. I was expecting something more interesting for the ending. However, I liked that in the beginning, it made me feel like I was actually in 1984. The description of what life was like in 1984 was spot on.

1. Without the differences that make me, me and you, you then we wouldn't have our own identity or personality.
Evidence: The Party makes people wear the same clothes, eat the same food, and live in the same apartments. There is no diversity between citizens, nothing that makes them stand out, no one is unique.
Example: When the Party is making Newspeak simpler so there's almost no need for people to think about what they're saying. This limits people's ideas and therefore everyone has the same personality and identity.
2. Propaganda was created to gain the support of the public, however, whatever you tell the public may not have to be true for them to believe you.
Example: The Party uses propaganda to tell its citizens that Big Brother is always watching when in reality Big Brother doesn't even exist.
Example: When the Party says that they're always in a war whether its Eastasia or Eurasia, when they're not fighting anyone and its just the Party who is bombing the proles.
3. Social inequality can be found many times throughout history and it has a negative effect on the entire community.
Example: In 1984, the proles are very poor when compared to the members of the Party who live in luxurious houses and the Proles live in houses that are falling apart. The members of the Party also get exclusive things like victory coffee.
Example: The Party members are safe from the bombings that are caused by the "war" with Eastasia/Eurasia. However, the proles are safe because they're poor and useless so the Party decides that nothing bad will happen if they only bomb the proles.

I connected this book to an article about the freedom that North Korean citizens have. Just like in 1984, citizens in North Korea have no freedom of movement, speech, or information. They have no connection to the rest of the world, so the only information they get is from the government itself, just like in 1984. There are also food and supply shortages in North Korea.
https://www.libertyinnorthkorea.org/learn-nk-challenges/

I connected this book with the book Breathe. The book is a dystopian novel where air isn't free anymore and people have to buy it from the government. In Breathe, the government also closely monitors its citizens since the only legal way to buy air is from them, and any other way is illegal. This book also has its "proles" and "members" of the Party. People can be premiums, who have an unlimited amount of air, or an auxiliary, who are always worrying about having air. Just like in 1984, people who go against the government are punished and sometimes are left outside the domes without air tanks to die.
