I really enjoyed My Brother Sam is Dead. It's wonderfully written but it has it's ups and downs. First off it does a wonderful way of story telling about the tragedies of War and how it can affect families. Though it is written with the highest of quality it has a problem of introducing too many characters. Some of them are Major and some are so minor that they have very few lines. This would be okay if they didn't give everyone names.

I can understand the importance of naming people so you can remember them but naming someone for them only have two lines and die in the middle of the book is not okay. I do like this book though even for it's many flaws. I would recommend this to 7th-8th graders or older people who like short, sweet and interesting story telling books. The reason I recommend this to 7th-8th graders and older people is because of it's shortness and easy to remember details. There is never a moment in the book where you go "Wait, who is that?" and "Wait what happened?" The book keeps up details and doesn't forget them.
