Analysis of quote
Through the use of diction and connotations in the extract, Shannon is portrayed as seductive. We see her seductive nature in the quote “Aren't you going to the dance? She asked, toying with a grand of her hair”, in particular the use of the word ‘toying’ that has playful connotations also associated with manipulation and games assuming she is trying to seduce and manipulate Scotty. We know she is personally and deliberately trying to connect with him as she specifically says ‘you’ and is asking him a question and seduction is quite personal so this proves she is trying to seduce him. The fact that she is “toying with a strand of her hair” draws attention to her femininity, in particular her hair which is known to attract men implying she is ‘toying’ with Scotty’s sexuality trying to seduce him.

In the extract the character of Shannon is constructed as dangerous and seductive through her physical appearance. The character of Scott is attracted to Shannon’s seductive flirtatious behavior. Scott describes Shannon’s hair as ‘Red red’ putting Repetition on the word. The colour red symbolises love and power. This colour makes the reader believe that Scott is I love with Shannon. The colour being so powerful also means Shannon has power over him. Red can also be described an alarming colour. This is a symbol that Scott should be alarmed as Shannon could be dangerous and manipulative. Through the characters flirtatious actions the reader can make the assumption that Shannon is trying to seduct Scott.

The character of Shannon can be perceived to be dangerous specifically by the quote of “... but he saw her face turn serious. ‘I will’, she said softly. The connotation of dangerous can be implied by the fact that she said ‘I will’ this being her response when the boy said ‘ remind me to stay on your goof side’ In this context she almost means this a promise that she will make a conscious effort to miantain contact with eachother. She also said this ‘softly’, this can mean that she is pretending to act she so that he can barely hear what she is saying on purpose. This would deliberately cause some sort of concern to this boy, as she seems to be acting manipulative a possibly innocent and friendly response.

Analysis:
The character of Shannon Smith has been constructed in the text as being seductive and this is seen through her actions in the following example, “she nibbled at her bottom lip. She glanced back at him shyly”. In this example the word ‘nibbling’ has connotations to delicacy and softness, however it draws attention to her lips and portrays as wanting the guy to kiss her, almost in an insisting way. This way is also seen when she glances “back at him shyly”, almost softening the superiority of her nibbling her lip and wanting to initiate it. The shyness portrays her to be more feminine and convey the typical stereotype of women as being soft in nature.

Response to class question
In the extract Shannon the character is contstructed as being seductive through her actions towards Scott. This is achieved through actions of touch which create intamacy and persistence.

Shannon is constructed to be seductive as she displays actions of intamacy and affection, “Touching the back of his hand again.” By Touching his hand the character achieves a sense of intamacy and personal connection in relation to cultural context. Touching ones hand can be seen as a more close or intimate action with another person, it also can be related to a sense of romance as it is quite personal. Analysis:
The character Shannon is created to be a character with a dangerous and seductive. This can be demonstrated in the quote “...and big, brown eyes, and full red lips.” as two sides of Shannon can be seen here. This makes her a possible danger as the way that they describe her eyes compared to her lips are contradictory. In the extract ‘Shannon’, Shannon Smith is portrayed as a seductive women. This is shown through her actions in this example “ she was playing with her hair again”. The word ‘again’ constructs her to be persistent and intentional and shows her to be repeating her actions to show or display a flirtatious side of her. She also draws attention to her self and her body and skin as she plays “with her hair” which creates the idea that she wants to show more skin or body to him, to have a more intimate relationship. The use of “her” and “she” shows that the person is watching her as she had distracting them, displaying the motive of being seductive and drawing them in. Through this she creates a seductive side of her character.

This shows how she is trying to flirt and hint that they should go to the dance together in a seductive manner. She is also quite manipulative when they go to put the bike I need Scottys car and "she bent over to pick up the bike". She does this to show off her physical assets and alarm his sexual innuendo. She tries to manipulate Scotty and try turn him on. She does this to seduce him and play with his mind.

In societal context touching can be a sign of attraction. Especially involving hands as that is so closely related to holding hands which is indefinitely a symbol of romantic attraction or seduction.

Another way the author constructed the character of Shannon to be seductive is through her appearance. Shannon’s character is described as having long flowing “red, red” hair. This focuses on the character of Scotty’s attraction to her appearance. Shannon is also described as having a dramatic look to her, with bright red lipstick and a high forehead.
