RELATIONSHIPS: Do your friends have a positive impact on your school's well-being?

Friends deliver emotional support and companionship, which is crucial for a student's academic well-being. Friends do more for students than just lend a sympathetic ear when things go hard. They foster a supportive environment where they feel respected and appreciated. This feeling of community fosters confidence and self-worth, which in turn creates an environment that is favourable to learning and personal development. Furthermore, friendships foster cooperation and teamwork, which boosts academic achievement by fostering support and common ideas. Ensuring comprehensive development, and social connections with friends also help maintain a good balance between academic endeavours and recreational activities. Additionally, friendships help pupils learn important social skills like communication and empathy, which will help them in the future. In the end, friends have a beneficial influence on a student's well-being that goes well beyond the classroom, influencing their resilience and the entire school experience.

Furthermore, friendships give pupils a network of support that goes beyond difficulties in the classroom. Friends provide stability and confidence during times of transition, such as relocating to a new school or managing personal changes. In uncertain times, they offer stability and familiarity, assisting pupils in adjusting to new surroundings and overcoming challenges. Furthermore, as kids learn to negotiate the intricacies of social connections, friendships aid in the development of critical life skills like problem-solving and conflict resolution. Friendships build a sense of community and belonging via shared experiences and mutual support, which improves kids' resilience and general well-being. Friendships have a positive impact that extends beyond scholastic achievement, enhancing kids' lives and equipping them for future challenges.

4. Diet and Eating Habits: The effect of having a good diet on students' lifestyle.

Research has shown that students can learn better when they’re well nourished, and eating healthy meals has been linked to higher grades, better memory alertness, and faster information processing. Foods that are rich in fiber, protein, and healthy fats (eggs, yogurt, apples, and oatmeal) keep the body feeling full longer, providing enough energy to focus. A well-balanced diet provides all of the energy you need to keep active throughout the day, and nutrients you need for growth and repair, helping you to stay strong and healthy. Plus, it also helps to prevent diet-related illnesses, such as some cancers. Furthermore, You can control your feelings better when dealing with problems and stay positive. Besides, feeling energetic can make you proactive in work, and work more effectively and creatively. Because nutrition impacts brain development, memory, cognitive function, energy, attention, and focus, which are all critical to the ability to absorb and retain information. Having a healthy diet will improve your looks which most students care about. In addition, it creates smooth and bright skin, and grows in height and muscles.

1. SDG 3: Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages is the third goal in the Sustainable Development Goals. This is made to help improve the healthcare system and prevent people from preventable deaths (traffic accidents, childbirth, drug abuse,...). Source: https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal3#targets_and_indicators

2. Speaking of well-being, an interesting problem that always comes to my mind is "Does having too much homework negatively affect your health" [2]. Having too much homework to do is a very common experience in Vietnam. But is it that bad?

Why?

Homework helps students revise things they have learned: It's hard to memorize everything in a school year but when we apply our knowledge immediately, it will help us remember longer. This is the purpose of homework and more of it means more chances to revise everything.

Prepare for the test and real life: Some students might say that assignments are just useless and don't do anything. However, they fail to consider that these exercises will help them in tests, thus helping them become more confident and prepare them for real jobs since they have to get used to doing loads of work

Why not?

Not much time on student's hands: Only spending time doing work is harmful to students. They also have to exercise their body and socialize with other classmates to ensure a happy well-being. Sitting down and doing work will make them sad and feel missing out.

So boring, so stressed: Adults often think their child is too lazy and does everything but work. There is a high chance they don't even think of how much homework there is and how hard it is. Combined with the pressure of your parents and teachers, doing assignments felt like a "forced" thing instead of a way to revise everything. This makes them bored and sometimes stressed if they don't finish it in time.

Overall the answer to the question is both yes and no. Homework is useful but it is also stressful. There are various solutions to this:

Both play and learn at the same time: With the rise of platforms like Kahoot, Quizzi, and Blooket, teachers have more ways to make doing homework more entertaining

Friendly competition: Awarding little prizes for making the most homework progress will motivate students.

(Question 3 in another post)

While homework is meant to reinforce learning and develop study habits, an excessive workload can lead to several negative outcomes:

Stress and Anxiety: Overwhelming homework assignments can cause stress and anxiety in students. The pressure to complete assignments on time and maintain high grades can be intense, leading to sleep disturbances, irritability, and feelings of helplessness.

Physical Health Issues: Lack of sleep due to late-night studying can result in fatigue, weakened immune system, and overall decreased physical well-being. Additionally, sitting for extended periods while doing homework can contribute to poor posture and musculoskeletal problems.

Decreased Motivation and Interest in Learning: When students feel overwhelmed by homework, they may become disinterested in learning and lose motivation to complete assignments. This can hinder their academic performance and lead to a cycle of procrastination and poor grades.

Our school (Vinschool) perspective is: (Translated) "Through a student-centered approach, we foster a love of learning, critical thinking, and creativity. Our goal is to help students become confident, compassionate, and globally-minded individuals who contribute positively to their communities and the world." This is true because learning is for students to grow themselves and to make way for students to contribute and help the globe. In addition, we also have the definition of a global citizen mindset: "A global citizenship mindset is about cultivating a deep understanding of diverse cultures, perspectives, and global issues, creating an inspiring community to learn, act, and advance innovation. social equity, sustainability, and cooperation to create a harmonious world." This is important and very related to making and finding solutions for the SDG goals.

Intro: About SDG - 3

Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that the United Nations set forth in 2015, Sustainable Development Goal 3 pertains to "Good Health and Well-Being". The stated official purpose is "to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages."

Topic: Impact of Electronics; the positives and drawbacks of using phones or any devices at school

In Vietnamese classrooms, the question of whether or not students should use their phones or devices brings out both the bright highlights and the dark side of these tools. Contrary, this is, mobile devices are loaded with all necessary features offering a great chance to look at education from a new angle. Students have the opportunity to become adventurers in learning where they can explore the depths of the subject online or through collaborative platforms like classmates, where they could do assignments or projects together. Also, some apps can personalize their learning. Language translation that has the capability to help with learning new words or having a multi-lingual origin can be considered to be a treasure. Yet, this will also be an insurmountable difficulty. The incessant beeping of alerts and the tempting social media all along the lesson can get in the way of concentration, thereby making it hard for a student to attend to teachers well and be actively involved. As well as cyberbullying and inappropriate content, these devices bring an altogether different burden to educators and parents which accounts for their fears.

The situation of the roles of electronics in Vietnamese schools is rather complicated and thus requires a multi-factorial solution. Schools may articulate straightforward and clearly communicated rules for device usage, allowing its inspirational nature for education but not for annoyances and distractions. It could entail specific times for research, assignments and clear policies on social media, as well. Parents gain prominence because they have the power to check the online world and educate their children to be digital citizens in accordance with some rules. The right approach of Vietnam classrooms in incorporating technology into the learning process ensures that it is used to improve learning without failing to achieve the very essence of traditional education: one-on-one interaction and having teachers present in classrooms. To sum up, the key to the issue is in forming a networked environment where tech-tools are student-centered to propel their educational missions.

College and Career Planning:

In order for an individual to fully develop their earthly potential, they must search for advanced study. And there are multiple options for people to seek in order to reach their full growth in adulthood.

If you attend Yale or Havard for a pHD, a Bachelor's degrees or a Master's degrees, you will be granted with a significantly larger amount of doors to your dream life, whereas a drop-out will only get so far. However, some individuals with spectacular minds do have more growth opportunities than people who have degrees and go to prestigious colleges. People who are destined to be actors, entrepreneurs, artists, businessman or businesswoman are much likely to not have a degree in their specialty. They are cutted out for much bigger things in life and they think that having a degree in science or engineering is a waste of time. I personally think that parents or parental figures should not judge a child based on their academic profile, they should judge them based on their specialty. If they want to become a professional pianist, let them be. Because at the end of the day, we all face the same dilemma: Would you rather work your dream job or a job that makes money?

People who are more artistic based would much rather work at an artist and do what they love even though the cash barely pays rental fees than working a nine-to-five job at a desk for an insurance company. People should encourage other people for what they want to do, not what they want them to do.

You can not force someone to be what they are not cut out for, doing so would only result to negative outcomes. Instead, you should support them for their decisions in life, being an artist or an actor, as long as the job is appropriate.

They can be a source of comfort, support, and guidance when needed, which can help lower stress and enhance mental health.
- Academic Support: Friends can also improve a person's academic achievement. They can work together on projects, exchange study materials, and provide support as required. People might be inspired and encouraged to aim for success by having peers who are driven and interested in their studies.

- Social Engagement: In the school community, friends are essential for participation and social engagement. Subtopic: Impact of Electronics; the positives and drawbacks of using phones or any devices at school

Electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops offer easy access to valuable information and resources that can aid students in learning more effectively. However, they can also lead to distractions, decreased face-to-face communication, and increased risk of cheating. Schools should implement clear guidelines for responsible use to maximize benefits and minimize drawbacks.

c. Country's perspective

In Vietnam, the use of phones in schools is a controversial topic. In 2018, the government prohibited phone use during classes and breaks to prevent distractions and promote engagement. So some schools ban the use of phones entirely, while others allow limited use during designated times. The Vietnamese government has issued a decree to prohibit phone use in classrooms and during breaks, while also requiring schools to educate students on responsible use and establish measures to prevent cheating. The Vietnamese approach focuses on balancing the benefits and risks of phone use and establishing clear guidelines for responsible use.

I will be studying Mechanical Engineering in college, but I only realized that was a job I wanted to do in my junior year of high school. While I've been researching online for summer camps to gain more experience before I enter college, I've noticed how many are open to elementary and middle schoolers that I was never aware of when I was a kid. These boot camps rely heavily on parents doing the research and enrolling their children, however I think it would be beneficial to educate the kids themselves on these opportunities, just in case their parents are too busy to look. (Which was my situation)

I think a great way to educate younger students about opportunities would be to have an email newsletter that teachers can announce in class or include it in our daily morning news videos---just small announcements like "There is a science lab course that is two weeks long coming up! If you are interested, let your parents know."

This way, kids gain more responsibility for learning what they are interested in and exploring career opportunities. It will allow them to spend more time focusing on what they really want to do in college.

4. Diet and Eating Habits; the effect of having a good diet on students' lifestyle:

In my point of view, students' diet is a crucial key to their life. A good diet can provide students with health benefits both physically and mentally. This is because getting enough nutrients provides students with a boost of energy to stay motivated throughout the day. Additionally, on a healthy diet, the brain releases more chemicals that help to focus and be sharp. At the same time, a healthy diet keeps students fit and strong, which can indirectly promote exercising and benefit students further.

In 2021, the Centre for Development of Community Initiative and Environment (C&E) conducted an online survey among 1,039 students, 227 teachers and 331 parents in 13 secondary schools in Hanoi. The research showed that students in Vietnam were becoming more overweight due to a lack of vegetables and fruits in meals, but also from eating a lot of processed food. From my experience, there is a considerable amount of students who dislike vegetables and often throw them away.

Fortunately, steps are being taken to promote healthy diets to students. For example, my school often discusses nutrition and a healthy and balanced diet. The school also puts plenty of vegetables in lunch, although I frequently think they should add more sources of protein.

There can be an excessive amount of emotional strain to turn in homework on time and keep up good ratings.

#2: Sleep Deprivation: Students who are overburdened with work can neglect sleep in order to finish assignments on time. Lack of sleep can affect their ability to think clearly, control their emotions, and feel well overall. Extended sleep deprivation has been blamed for a number of health problems, such as weakened immune system,...

#3: Physical Health Problems: Prolonged periods of sitting while studying can cause physical health issues like headaches, neck strain, and back pain. It can also lead to a sedentary lifestyle and a lack of physical activity, which raises the risk of obesity and other related health problems.

#4: Burnout: Burnout can result from taking on a lot of homework without taking enough breaks or downtime. Frustration, low motivation, and mental and physical tiredness are typical symptoms of burnout. It may have a major effect on both general wellbeing and academic achievement.

Country's perspective

In Vietnam, a person's education has always come first, even at a young age. Vietnamese students can endure intolerable levels of stress and schoolwork despite receiving some of the greatest education available worldwide. As a Vietnamese student, I have seen so many cases of students who suffer badly from academic validation and also mental health problems. Early pressure management training has made students nearly emotionless and conditioned to focus only on their studies. This can greatly affects their social life as well as their own way of thinking.

Brief description on SDG 3

SDG 3 aims to achieve universal health coverage and equitable access of healthcare services to all men and women. It proposes to end the preventable death of newborns, infants and children under five (child mortality) and end epidemics.

Discussion on topic 3: Relationships; Do your friends positively impact your school's well-being?

While being in an school environment, one thing you surely need is relationships between your teachers and classmates, most vital of them all is relationships with your classmate - or so called friendships.

Friendship is defined as close bonds between individuals marked by mutual affection, trust, and support. Both people provide companionship, understanding, and contribute to a sense of belonging and well-being. These could not only act as person who help you with personal problems, be your company at times, be there for you in hard times but also benefits you educational growth as a rival. At most times, if you are lucky enough, you will find a person/group that actually does all the above for and with you, giving positive results on your journey. Otherwise you could end up in toxics friendship that not only you could not even be yourself and have to amuse the other in order to keep up the friendship, it will drain your energy and you would be wasting time for a long course of time until you realize everything that had passed.

For that, it is safe to conclude that while friendships at school can enhance well-being through support and companionship, they also carry the potential to introduce stress factors and conflicts that may negatively affect mental health. In addition, you should note that it is even more important to navigate friendship challenges wisely to maintain well-being for yourself while maintaining the relationship.

Vinschool's perspective and actions towards this problem

Vinschool has taken steps to ensure the well-being of students in their relationships. These efforts include promoting positive social interactions through extracurricular activities, establishing peer support programs, offering counseling services, and integrating educational initiatives focused on empathy, communication skills, and conflict resolution into the curriculum.

Relationships; Do your friends positively impact your school's well-being?

When we were still infants, we relied everything on our family. But as we grow up, we start to experience more about the outside world. We started talking to many other people, making friends. From kindergarten, to primary, secondary, high school and college, friends always play important roles and have a strong influence on our life, especially mental health.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS ?

Having thoughtful and empathic friends that can be our mental support is essential for us especially when you are facing many changes and challenges in a student’s life. Having friends that are trustworthy and sympathetic enough to share your stories really positively affects our psychological health. Not only that, having supportive friends will boost our overall performance in many things that we do, especially in studying. That is because they provide a creative, effective and enjoyable study environment. Through friends we can learn teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, etc. Furthermore, friends also teach us life skills and lessons such as communication skills, cooperation, sympathiy, listening skills so we can be open to make relationships and be open to acquire new ideas and knowledge. Lastly, the most important thing in my opinion, is that friends can teach us and show us how to enjoy life at its fullest. We can hang around, watch movies, stay late, drive around and so much more. Everytime we hang out with friends, we feel like we are understanded, appreciated and worthy of living.

IS THERE ANY DOWNSIDES ?

However, we truly live in a society where there are all kinds of people, if there are good, there are bad too. Having a good friend beside you is not always the case. First of all, they will slowly drive you into the fun and games that you think are ok at first but turn out to be toxic addictions and habits the more you get into it such as drinking, smoking, cursing, partying, etc. In addition, their opinions and mindset will affect yours too because most of the time, people want to blend into a friend group because we all hate the feelings of being left out. As a result, we will have a weak mindset like the bad friends too, which will reduce our level of happiness and our overall quality of life.

In conclusion, friends can have positive or negative effects on you depending on how you choose your friends. That is why it is essential to have good friends on your side especially in your student years, because this is the period that you are learning, exploring and improving yourself and friends contribute significantly to this progress.

I. SDG #3

"To ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages."

That is the official statement, representative of the third goal among the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as described by the United Nations. This goal focuses on good health and well-being.

II. Chosen topic: impact of electronics on academic performance.

Education has come a long way, from books and chalkboards to advanced technology like the usage of tablets and projectors. A few teachers are even using holograms and VR headsets for their lectures, allegedly. Electronics have been undoubtedly a rich source of information and an effective method of incorporating further interactive elements into lessons. In a way, this encourages students to engage in active learning via multiplayer quizzes or online assignments. An easier access to all encyclopedias and information also help students to learn new things with ease.

Despite sounding like an ideal tool of learning, electronics still have their drawbacks. Firstly, students may be dependent on the internet for their own works, which means they may not be able to actually understand and remember what they saw. This leads to a gap in knowledge later on. Students may also be distracted with their studies when they have a device on hand and is not turning their full attention to the teacher. Students may even be doing other irrelevant activities, such as texting or watching things in class. Not to mention, electronic devices may be faulty and there may also even be misinformation on the web, which are contributory causes to ineffective learning. A problem that students may also encounter is the fact that electronic devices are capable of making their visions deteriorate.

SDG 3 is one of the United Nations goals which is Good health and well being. The subtopic I chose is college and career planning. At Chantilly High school we have many resources to help make our college decisions as well as a college and career specialist who helps us with our essays and scholarship searches. many schools don't have a college and career center which makes it difficult to make college decisions With the help of a college and career specialist we can determine which college is right for us. As far as the college application process it can be stressful with so many parts to the application. Here in the United States in our Junior year of high school, we take whats called the SAT and ACTs which are known as standardized tests to help us get into college. The tests are not required to take sand some colleges don't even look at your scores but it is always important to check what they want to see in the application and what is optional. The college essays are also optional for some colleges but most colleges require essays because these tell them information about you and your personal goals and what you like and are interested in.
