This is a quote I had written after being told the story of the mountain. The story goes along the lines of saying that there would be no streams or rivers, forest trees or grass or the shore along the beach without a mountain. Within the four whanaus at Mission Heights Junior College I strongly believe that mountains whanau is the whanau that holds everyone together. The environment in Mountains whanau is filled with friendliness and joy, with people who depend on one another and with people who are independent. A source of happiness while being educated and being social at school is most important and with mountains being the whanau that represents those two central values, I believe we are are the ones that the rest of the whanaus depend on.‘’There would be no valley rivers, no grass of evergreens, no sun shining beyond the blue sky without the mountain peaks’’. We are independent on our own as a whanau but mountains students depend on each other to uphold the tile of being a family. As other whanaus depend on other whanaus to stand out we do nothing to stand out yet we’re the brightest whanau out of all four. Even though we don’t manage to win a lot, we still stand out for the central values that we possess and share throughout the school. You win some you lose some but in the end it's about who you share the experience with. Resilience/striving describes mountains whanau the best because no matter how many times we fall as a whanau, we always come out standing on our own two feet. “Every mountain is within reach if you just keep climbing”. This quote is written by Barry Finlay about his journey for when he climbed to the top of Kilimanjaro. He was halfway up the mountain when he suddenly started feeling pain from two tears in the meniscus of his knee and feeling the effects of altitude sickness. He felt the weight of the world on his shoulders which made him want to stop right then and there, but he remembered his daughter’s favourite movie, Finding Nemo, a movie that quotes the famous saying of, “Just keep swimming”. This quote helped get him to the peak of the mountain and if we all keep on climbing or just keep swimming, we can conquer any mountain that we face.Mountains central value should be resilience/striving because our market research showed that resilience/striving is what mountains students strongly believe describes mountains whanau best. Red symbolises strength, powerful, determination as well as passion.For example, in our logo we used the colour green for the letter ‘M’ that is made out of the maori greenstone the triple twist. We left the greenstone green because to mountains whanau it symbolises how as a family we grow as one in harmony. The triple twist is about keeping our harmony and our cultures together as one. We chose the colour red to represent griffin wings to show the meaning of power, strength and courage.These two colours are significant to us as a whanau because it expresses the core values. Our whanau is all about determination and growth as well as staying strong together as one. Therefore these two colours work together to create a  visual impact.

A triple twist is a Maori Design that represents the joining together of people and their cultures. This shows that mountains are a harmony. We also added the griffin because a griffin is a powerful animal that lives in the mountains. For example, instead of drawing just a plain ‘M’, we used the triple twist to make it into an ‘M’. The ‘M’ also shows two mountains which represents our whanau. The way we used up negative space is by adding the griffin wings on both sides of the ‘M’. We used the griffin because it shows power throughout the whanau. Additionally, we added the triple twist because of how we bond together as a whanau. The triple twist and griffin wings work together to create such a visual impact.

Soaring high and being driven is what the mountains students do. For example in our logo we used the griffin wings because it shows power throughout the whanau. Using the triple twist it shows how strong of a bond we as a whanau have. The colours we have used also express the same meanings. Through everything it shows how as a whanau through trial and error we still stay in harmonyas one and aim high together straight to the top of the mountain.These are the reasons as to why we have used the triple twist and griffin wings as a symbolism for mountains whanau.

These both work together because the triple twist shows how we work together and the griffin shows our strength and courage. It shows that we can only have strength and courage if we work together as a whanau. The text goes well with our dominant image because it has our mountains slogan and the bold font is hard to miss while looking at our logo. For example, the triple twist and the griffin work together to show our strength together. It shows how we can only achieve great if we work together.
Through the triple twist it shows as a whanau we go through trials together and when we get knocked down we still aim high to the top of the mountain like a griffin. It’s these visuals that work together to create such an impact.

This is also the reason for the placing of our slogan.The font is bold alone but when placed on outer sides of the dominant image it balances the logo well shaping it into place.  When looking to the top of the logo where the slogan starts your eyes travel downwards falling upon the dominant image where it shows symbolism of what mountains stands for, and then you finish with reading the end of our slogan.Therefore this is why our font and slogan placement are important and ideal to our logo.

Family means always sticking together, helping each other and supporting each other. These are qualities that Mountains whanau possess. Although we may not win everything, we never give up because we are already one big happy whanau. We help each other strive to the top and do our best with the challenges that we face. “Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.” -  David Ogden Stiers. This is a quote that was said by a famous disney voice actor. This quote is from the famous disney film ‘Lilo and Stitch’. It reminds us that family is always first, and that we should continue to support each other through thick and thin and no one should ever get left behind or forgotten.
 Family should be the central value of Mountains whanau. Whenever we are struggling with something, we can always be reminded that we have each other. There will always be someone to support us along the way. Therefore, this is why family should be the central value of mountains.
