During the 1950s Americans were living in a place of great social complacency and intellectual darkness. This can mainly be attributed to the government cracking down on many innocent people, for fear of communism. This can be largely seen in the way that the culture was changed and shaped.

Cultural Perspective-Civil Rights Movement

During the 1950s a prominent idea was the Civil Rights Movement. African Americans were fighting for their rights. They faced extreme scrutiny and discrimination. This shows that many citizens were feeling unsatisfied with their role in society.

This photo depicts one of the many protests held trying to help fight for equal rights. This was a very big idea at the time because of all the people that were feeling suppressed by the government and their peers.

Different Perspective-Brown v. Board of Education

While many African Americans were still struggling to make advances socially there were some legal advances made. For example, Brown v. Board of education provided African Americans with the ability to get an equal education. This was a major step in overall integration and equal rights for African Americans.

The photo below shows an integrated grade school. This photo supports the above argument because it is a photo taken directly as a result of the ruling in Brown v Board of Education.

The 1950s was a time of social complacency and intellectual darkness for the populace of America. The government cracked down on any sort of radical individualism or reforms due to the overbearing nature that the Cold War and Communism was having on the rest of the world. Due to this lack of change, American citizens tried to express themselves in whatever way they could.

During the 1950s a new genre of music was taking over the youth of America: Rock and Roll. It's a style of music that was influenced by R&B music that would often be played by blacks. Kids from this age used Rock and Roll as a way to express themselves while everything else in their lives were very cookie cutter.

This is a photo of Elvis Presley, one of the most popular artist of this time. He represented having a carefree sort of life, where he could do whatever he wanted. Many of the youth during this period were envious and loved him so much because they too wanted to have a carefree life away from the government's crack down.

Cultural Perspective- Television

During the 1950s there was an invention that would change the way people lived their lives forever: the television. Television became one of the most popular ways to pass time during this period. It allowed people to stay up to date on news, or just watch silly shows or movies with their family or friends. The U.S. government used television as a way to control the populace. The government would put out propaganda and specifically themed shows to keep the citizens under their surveillance.
