Ischemic injuries can cause traumatic injuries to the brain, heart, and other vital organs. A company based out of Houston is creating a therapy for mitochondrial transplantation to decrease the harmful effects of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Individual isolated mitochondrial cells are delivered to the ischemic area to disrupt the catabolism that causes cell death. Alexander Schueller (2020), explains that when there is an interference in blood flow the affected cell no longer receives the oxygen needed to produce sufficient energy, therefore causing the affected cell to function improperly. Mitochondrial transplantation therapy was invented to improve outcomes in patients who have had an organ transplant with graft function specifically heart and kidney transplants and for patients who have experienced an MI or ischemic stroke (Hastings, 2020).

Many of us have heard the phrase "time is tissue." I believe that this initiative treatment will allow patients with ischemic injuries the time needed to perfuse the affected tissue. The World Health Organization (2020) identified ischemic heart disease as the leading cause of death in the world. As an ICU nurse, I have experienced firsthand the catastrophic events that occur for patients who have had a heart attack or stroke. Currently, there is not much that can be done to provide quick reperfusion to patients with irreversible ischemic injuries.
