Platy (Xiphophorus sp.) is a freshwater fish in the genus of Xiphophorus that does not have a 'sword' at the bottom of the tails. They are livebearers; such as guppy and molly (Poecillidae). Platy fishes are native to the Central and Southern America : Ciudad Veracus, Mexico to northern Belize. Adults lives in warm springs, canals and ditches with slow moving water, silts and weedy banks. It is omnivorous, feed on variety of aquatic organism ; worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter. Popular with several color varities that usually use in ornamental fish industry. Minimum aquarium size are 60 cm.

Life Cycle of Platy

Platy can live up until 2-4 years. It reproduce after attain the sexual maturity after 3-4 months. Undergoes internal fertilization. The male platy releases gametes (sperm) into the female oviduct; by using the gonopodium which is modified stick-like anal fin. The platy categorized under the livebearers, the ovoviviparous reproduction. Next, the eggs will develop inside the female until it hatch inside the body of the female. The female will carry the eggs for 24 to 30 days of gestation. About 20 to 80 young are born. The young will grow until it reach maturity age about 3 to 4 months old. Then they will start reproduce again.

How to Differentiate Male and Female?

Sexual Dimorphism between male and female

Sex dimorphism for male and female platies are differentiate by their anal fin. For female, the anal fin will appears as a normal fin. Meanwhile, the male have a modified fin that seems stick-like fin that are called as the gonopodium; it is use for their reproduction process.

Breeding techniques

Female and male ratio are 2F:1M.
Use breeding cage for spawning phase of the female; observe the size of the abdomen and presence of gravid spot. A sturdy covers needed for the breeding cage, other way it will jump out of it.
The breeding cage must be place in a aquarium or tank that are absence of any adults to avoid being eaten.
Remove the mother after it totally gave birth and place back with other adult for the next breeding phase.

Red Coral Platy is a hardy and adaptable fish.

Max length

Male : 4.0 cm TL

Female : 6.0 cm TL

Maturity L : 1 - 4.2cm.

Coloration

It have a vibrant coloration of red-orange. For male coloration are slightly more deep than the female.

Behavior

The behavior are energetic and usually swim in the mid and upper level of water. Non-hostile towards its own species and other invertebrate and vertebrate species.

Diet

It is an undemanding fish and non-picky eater; can eat all variety of feed.

On Friday morning, me and da boys went to Bukit Maras to search out for drift wood in the area. We found a good design of driftwood with great amount. We soak the drift woods inside a tank at home for about 2 weeks; to make it more dense than the water for aquarium use.

I received an Aquarium that given by Dr Lokman randomly. My Aquarium located on the third row of the aquariums rack. Firstly, i drain out the leftover water from the previous project using rubber pipe. I wash the aquarium using saltwater to clean it from any potential pathogen left. Then i rinse it with freshwater and left it to dry for few days.

I bought my Coral red platy at Mingyu Three. Got 6 platies; 2 Male:4 Female for RM 10. I placed it in the breeding place made from styrofoam box. Water mixed with vitamin and indian-almond extract. Acclimate for 10 minutes before released into the breeding place to reduce stress because of sudden change of temperature.

Aquarium setup

Add some gravel from lata chabgkah as the base part.
Elevate the left corner using aquarium soil and black gravel for the aquatic plant.
Wash off by add and siphon out the water at the same time until the qater become clear.

I plant the aquatic plant using the long aquascape forceps.
I also placed two large stone that have been grown with moss.
The driftwood placed at the right part of the aquarium.

Breeding cage set up using ecoshop bucket. The broodstock will be placed in the bucket waiting for giving birth. The fish fry will get out the bucket and enter the main culture box.

I bought new box for the new fry. I mix the 5th and 7th November in the same box as the first batch.

The 9th November batch i placed in the different box as the second batch.

I decide to buy a breeding cage for the display aquarium, DIY from a bucket from eco shop Gong Pak Jin. I place all the adults indaide the new cage.

Unfortunately, one of the platy manaage to get out the box by force. It injured herself. I bring it to GPJ hatchery to give some treatment. I used indian-almond extract mix with blue salt for the injured fish to heal; it is to prevent any bacterial or fungal infection to the fish.

I found one of the platy in the display aquarium massacred by one of the shrimp inside the tank. The fish diagnosed with swimbladder disfunction because it swim near the bottom and hard to get food on the top of the aquarium; just the day before it found dead. This is the Male one.

The broodstock in GPJ hatchery, seems improved their breeding ability. They produced 40 fry in total, it may due to high nutrient feed given which is livefeed; Daphnia sp., Moina sp., mosquito larva and bloodworm. The birth rate increase about 70% from previous fry produced in first and second batch.

Female broodstock in the display aquarium, found dead. Symptoms before death, the fish swims alone near the bottom. The fish did not eat for about three days, may due to disfunction of swimbladder. This is the female.

I clear the unwanted particle which is the faeces from every tank for once a week using this gigantic dropper bought from Ming Yu Three. After finish the cleaning, i will top up the water based on the water removed from the cleaning session and the water will be mixed with vitamin solution and Indian-almond leaves extract.

This is the Moina sp. culture tank, we feed the Moina sp. with infosuria to boost up their enrichment, so the nutrient value are higher for the fish feed. Both broodstock were given with this livefeed on the evening feeding.
