Collaborative Project: Exploring Contemporary Education Issues through AI and Global Perspectives

Objective:

This project fosters cross-cultural collaboration and global understanding by engaging students in an international virtual exchange. Students from different countries will investigate a significant contemporary education issue, creatively use AI for analysis and presentation, and interact with peers through virtual presentations and discussions.

Assignment Details:

1. Form International Groups:

• Collaborate with students from the same institution and with international partners on the suggested topic

• Group members could use commonly accessible communication tools/ platforms

2. Select a Contemporary Education Issue:

Each group is given a suggested topic for exploration & discussion (preferred).

3. Collaborative Research and Analysis:

Research Sources: Explore the issue using news/personal stories, scholarly articles, or government reports.

Key Questions to Consider:

•        Why is this issue relevant in my country?

•        What key issues, challenges, or controversies are highlighted?

•        What cultural, economic, or policy factors influence the issue in each context?

•        How are the issues similar or different in these countries?

AI Integration: Leverage AI tools for (not mandatory):

•        Summarizing and analyzing data from articles and reports.

•        Translating non-English materials.

•        Creating visual elements (images, infographics, charts, videos, or maps).

•        Simulating potential solutions or trends using AI.

4. Deliverables:

Presentation (Slides/Video):

•        Create a collaborative presentation using tools like Google Slides or Canva.

•        Include visuals and AI-generated elements (e.g., charts, maps, or infographics).

•        Highlight cultural comparisons and the role of AI in the analysis.

Posting and Peer Review:

•        Post the final presentation on a shared virtual exchange platform - Padlet.

•        Include a short description of the issue, key findings, and the group’s reflections.

5. Virtual Exchange Discussion:

•        Presentation Day: Groups present their findings in a live or synchronous format via Zoom

•        Cross-Cultural Comments:

•        Students review and comment on at least four presentations from other groups

•        Comments should reflect critical engagement, ask questions, and share insights from their cultural perspective.

6. Final Reflection - submitted to your own professor

Each student will write an individual 1-page reflection discussing:

•        How did the virtual exchange enhance their understanding of the education issue?

•        Insights gained from cross-cultural comparisons and discussions.

•        The effectiveness and limitations of using AI in this project.

• Overall experience of these three phases of virtual exchange with international students

Grading Criteria:

•        Collaboration: Active participation in international group work and communication.

•        Research Quality: Depth of analysis, use of credible sources, and cultural insights.

•        AI Integration: Creative and effective use of AI tools in research and presentation.

•        Presentation Quality: Clarity, creativity, and engagement in the final presentation.

•        Peer Interaction: Thoughtful and meaningful comments on other groups’ work.

During our research, AI tools were very useful. They helped us find information faster, organize ideas, and even improve our writing. AI also made it easier to summarize complex topics and understand different perspectives. However, we realized that AI is not perfect. Sometimes, it provides incorrect or biased information, which means we must always verify facts. AI can assist in research, but human thinking and analysis are still necessary to ensure accuracy and critical understanding.

Looking into the future, AI will continue to expand in education. It has the potential to make learning more inclusive, helping students with different needs. For example, AI can support students with disabilities by providing customized learning experiences. It can also be useful in online education, where students can receive instant feedback and guidance. However, there are also challenges. Teachers need proper training to use AI effectively, and there is a risk that students might become too dependent on technology instead of developing their own problem-solving skills.

In Honduras, AI in education is still developing. Many schools, especially in rural areas, do not have access to advanced technology, making it difficult to integrate AI tools into the classroom. However, if the government and private institutions invest in education technology, AI could become a powerful tool to support teachers and students. It could help improve learning conditions, especially for those who do not have access to high-quality education. In the end, AI should not replace teachers, but rather support them in creating better learning experiences for students.

AI in education has the potential to transform learning by making it more personalized, accessible, and efficient. However, its impact varies depending on the resources and support available in each country. While AI tools can assist with research and learning, they cannot replace critical thinking or the role of teachers. In Honduras, the integration of AI in education is still limited, but with proper investment and training, it could become a valuable tool to improve learning conditions. The key is to use AI as a complement to education, ensuring that technology enhances, rather than replaces, human interaction and creativity.

I found the presentation very interesting and relevant, since artificial intelligence is becoming more and more present in our lives, especially in the field of education. I really liked how the group approached the topic from different perspectives and included their own experiences as students. That made the content easier to understand and relate to. Sometimes we think of AI as just another tool, but thanks to this presentation, I understood both its advantages and its risks. I found it very helpful how they showed us ways to use AI responsibly to support our learning without fully depending on it. It was a very informative presentation that really made me reflect on how AI will continue transforming education.
