I have had experience observing this Scenario in Field Education 1, on my first Placement. I listened to a Community Treatment Order Hearing via phone conference.

I felt empathy for the Case Managed Client who did not want the Community Treatment Order (CTO) renewed for one year. The CTO renewal for Depot Injections was granted against the Clients wishes.

I personally feel that an alternative to Depot Injections needs to be Researched. I did not like observing the distress caused to the Client by renewal of the CTO.

I feel the statutory aspects of social work, especially mandated reporting, can cause a lot of dilemmas for social workers and service users alike.

Mandated reporting of suspected child abuse can cause significant distress in both the mother and social worker.

AASW Ethics and Practice Guideline requires social worker to report if there is risk of child abuse. However, in many cases reporting can cause more damage removing the child from the mother.

Furthermore, such dilemma can create barriers for communication between social workers and service users.

Getting clients to comply with governmental rules can more often than not take the humanistic aspect, and relational experience/rapport, out of the equation. It can become more about policy and procedures (or ticking boxes), rather than the reality and complexity of a person's individual situation.

Within certain government based social work roles, the line between social work ethics and practice standards, and Government guidelines is very hard to navigate. For example mandatory reporting of potential DV within the family context to FACS, and how this may not take into consideration the entire story of the family and each individual within that family, or how this reporting may affect the family.

As previously stated this can create further barriers between client and social workers

I think certain guidelines are important to support children’s and clients safety and well ding is protected. However, this should be assessed on a case by case basis and the person needs to be included and supported through the process. Working through a child protection case collaboratively can increase the therapeutic alliance and trust with a client. Flexibility and a person-centres approach is key in the process.
