The story follows young Adeline, an unwanted and mistreated little girl. Since birth, she was seen as bad luck because of how her mother died shortly after she was born. Things would continue to worsen for sweet Adeline as she's tormented by a truly evil step-mother and a seemingly uncaring father. But hard times aren't enough to stop a strong, intellegent girl like Adeline!

Protaganist

The protaganist is Adeline Yen Mah, an extremely smart and thoughtful girl. She skipped several grades and went to college at the age of fourteen. She's oddly obidient, but I guess that's just how children were raised back then. But if it were me, I definitly wouldn't sit back and take all the abuse quietly. Really, some of the things Adeline's step-mother did and said to her were infuriating! Adeline's patience is admirable, I guess. Overall, Adeline is an amazing person who didn't let her tough life hold her back.

What I Liked About This Book

I liked that it was a true story told by the person the events in the book happened to. This way, you know exactly how she felt because she's real, not just a character. Another thing I liked was the historical aspect of the story. I love Asian history so it's not a surprise that I enjoyed this book so much. There were also some heartbreaking moments that I enjoyed, painfully. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes foreign takes on classic fairytales. In my opinion, this was a much better version of Cinderella, even without the fairy God-mother.

I think the topic of this story is overcoming hard times and staying strong. Adeline even says in a section titled "Preface," that she hopes anyone who is feeling unwanted and worthless may read her book and remember to always know your worth.

"Perhaps others who were also unwanted children may see them (her memories through her writing) a hundred years from now, and be encouraged. I imagine them opening the pages of my book and meeting me (as a ten-year-old) in Shanghai, without actually having to leave their own homes in Sydney, Tokyo, London, Hong Kong or Los Angeles. And I shall welcome each and every one of them with a smile and say, "How splendid of you to visit me! Come in and let me share with you my story... because I understand only too well the rankling in your heart and what you are going through.""
