Blackface

Blackface has been around for many years, and started in the mid 1800s. It would be performed on stage or on television. it would give blacks bad stereotypes. For example on television it would make blacks look stupid, poor and not know how to be normal, and was just very racist. Black actors would blackface themselves and they would have to act if they had the bad stereotypes too. That was really the only way blacks could be on television at that time period. It has very much improved in the years. black faced stopped being on TV or theater in the early 1900s, but it is still around today. I have never seen it in my life or heard of it until i was being told about it a few years ago in class. People are not being racist toward it today they are more just doing it to act black. it doesn't make any sense because it looks to be racist even if the person doesn't mean to be. In the world today it has definitely improved itself by getting rid of blackface on television and getting it off stage but it is still around, and only the people that do it can be stopped if they want to themselves. Racism today from the late 1800s is a lot better because black people are not being attacked or made fun of across the country on TV, and people that do it today are not trying to be racist toward black people they are thinking it as just dressing as the character they are. It should be stopped but it has definitely improved in the years.

Black Women Steps up to The Mic

The black women that talked on this slam poetry seemed very afraid and she said she is always afraid of doing anything in her life. She says that she gets no respect by anyone and everyone wants her but she can't want anything. I would side with her if it was back in the early 1900s because today is totally different from when it was 60 years ago. There are black actresses, black women athletes, black women politics, and many more things that black women have done differently than back then. Back then black women were being mistreated and had almost no rights but now it is totally different. I believe that the mistreatment of black women and also white women has definitely changed for the better. women are getting more equality towards men and they are making a difference in the world. They have there own voice now and aren't being controlled by the man of the house or by the government. just about two years ago we had an African American President and his wife Michelle did great things for children. People liked her so much they think she should run for president. Back then that would of never been possible. Treatment and equality has changed tremendously in this time, but the women that was on the stage of the slam poetry did say some right things. You can be afraid but it can just depend where you are. If you are in a rough neighborhood you can obviously be scared but if you are out of those areas you shouldn't be scared to walk the streets. I know i can't talk for a black women but i too have been targeted in my life for the decisions i have made and i too get scared whenever i walk by the administration or hear the phone ring in class because i always think its for me, because there has been a target built on my back, but i don't get scared at other schools. I strongly believe that now in 2018 black women would rather live in this time then back when the eyes were watching god was written.

How to Raise A Black Son In America

In the Eyes Were Watching God it seemed like Jody was never afraid of being around white people because she group up with a white family and was not hurt while being with them. She didn't even know she was black until she was a young teenager. On this Ted talk this guy says that he can't raise his children the same as white kids are being raised. He tells his child to not do things that white kids could do to protect them from cops and others that would be scared or hurt them. I feel like it really depends on where you are in the world. There are gonna be people that are racist and don't like the people that are walking around, but it is not like that everywhere. From the time of Janie to now i feel like the world has gotten better with whites and blacks coming together and not fight against each other. There are still problems with one a other not liking it for some reason but it has definitely improved throughout the years.

Hurricane Katrina

In total there were 1,833 deaths, and 93 percent of those deaths were blacks. Ranging from 50-80 percent of the people either didn't have a home, car, or didn't graduate high school. almost all were in poverty and the rich or more wealthier people were helped first and they were mostly white. In the Eyes Were Watching God it was very similar. more people that died were black and were in poverty. In the book people were just tossed into mass graves and were separated by color but in Katrina that did not happen. From 1928 to now i feel like it has definitely changed for the better but there are still problems. The people that were being helped first were white but the money is the problem. I think if it was the other way around they would still want the money. It is wrong how it works like that and that is what needs to change. I don't think it is all about race in this because it has definitely changed for the better.

What is White Privilege, really?

In this reading i had to agree and disagree with some of it. The article had some good points about how there are problems with white power and how blacks don't have some of the same rights. It said that bandades were only a white person color, and i disagree with that because they are all kinds of colors. In the 1800s the bandages were white and that was the color of the cloth coming off of the sheep. They would of had to get black paint to color the bandages, and i don't think they would have had the money or want to spend the money to do so. Now i think that it is totally fixed because the colors of bandades are all different and there is not one primary color. Another topic that she wrote about was the people wont be followed or asked questions by the law like black people would be. I can agree with this because in a lot of cities where the crime rate is high the majority of the population are black people. Also there are plenty of racist cops that will pick out a black person just on the streets in a rough neighborhood, but i can't fully agree because when my father was in his teens he was always being bothered by the cops because he was always with his group of friends and it was when there was the mafias. I don't think it has to do with the race it just depends on what situation you are in and how you look. I don't think that it has gone away fully because black kids are still being shot but i think white privilege has definitely lessened from the time when the eyes were watching god was written.
